Women's basketball comes up short against Catholic

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team had a pair of players in double figures Wednesday night in Landmark Conference action against Catholic at Thompson Gymnasium, including a game-high 24 points from Emily Martin. The Cardinals saw a 14-point lead in the second half vanish, but some missed opportunities at the foul line hurt the Blue Jays as Catholic held on for a 66-61 win.

Catholic (12-2, 3-0 Landmark) jumped ahead 11-2 out of the gates, but Elizabethtown (10-3, 0-3 Landmark) used an 8-0 run of its own to get back in it. Nikki Thompson drained a jumper on a pass from Emma Hoesman, who had a game-high seven assists for E-town. Emily Martin went 4-for-4 at the foul line during the stretch and canned a jumper of her own (Hoesman assist) and the Jays were within a point at 11-10 with 2:34 left in the first quarter.

Martin picked up her second foul with six seconds left in the first, and Payton Smith split a pair of free throws to make it 16-12. E-town got the ball into Hoesman, who passed ahead to Lydia Lawson. Lawson launched a last-second three-pointer before the buzzer sounded and banked home the trey as Elizabethtown trailed 16-15 going into the second.

Catholic pushed its lead back up to eight while Martin was kept on the bench to avoid even more foul trouble. She reentered the game with 3:52 left in the first half and the result was another Elizabethtown run.

Julia Craig's layup with 3:16 in the second came off a Cardinals' turnover to cut it to six. Two of Melissa Errico's 14 put CUA back up eight, but a jumper by Martin and a three from Craig had the Jays back within one possession with 1:42 remaining.

Throughout the game, Catholic always had an answer for E-town. After Craig's three-pointer, Bernadette Launi nailed one of her own and the Cardinals scored the final five points of the first half to take a 33-25 into the break.

The lead blossomed to 11 in the first two and a half minutes, 37-26, but there was no quit in the Blue Jays. Down by as many as 14 in the third quarter, E-town was able to get it down to single digits heading into the fourth quarter.

Martin and Abby Beyer combined to score 11 of Elizabethtown's 14 third-quarter points to keep E-town alive.

Launi's and-one with 8:31 left to play looked like it could be the kill shot for Catholic, but Martin and Beyer jump-started the Jays and over the following six minutes, suddenly Elizabethtown was a basket away from taking the lead.

Michelle DeSantis' layup with 4:16 remaining had the Cardinals up 58-48, but Craig nailed two straight shots, a three-pointer and a layup, to cut the deficit in half to five with 3:29 to go.

Martin, who posed a real threat, in the second half especially, hit three foul shots and brought her team within two, 58-56.

Errico extended the slim margin to four with a basket with under a minute left and made one of two at the line half a minute later as Catholic led by five with 31 seconds remaining.

Beyer knocked down her second three of the contest on a second possession after the Cardinals couldn't corral a previously missed shot. Craig found Beyer for the three and it was a two-point game once again.

Catholic hit a few more free throws down the stretch and Elizabethtown couldn't get another bucket as the Cardinals held on for the 66-61 victory.

Martin tallied another double-double as she finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Beyer added 11 points while Craig ended up with seven. Elizabethtown shot 13-for-22 at the foul line, where Catholic was 17-for-20.

The loss puts the Blue Jays in an 0-3 hole in the Landmark Conference with another tough matchup looming. E-town heads to Selinsgrove on Saturday to face Susquehanna at 2 p.m.
