Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Blue Jays fly by River Hawks for first Landmark win

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- The women's basketball knew it had an early-season gauntlet to go through when the Landmark schedule came out prior to the season. Saturday afternoon at Houts Gymnasium and playing the fourth of the top four preseason favorites in the conference in a row, the Blue Jays flew past the Rivers Hawks 78-53 to grab their first league win of the season and avoid an 0-4 hole to start the conference slate. Emily Martin led the way with 20 points and 11 rebounds as E-town nearly had six players in double figures in the win.

Elizabethtown (11-3, 1-3 Landmark), who never trailed in the game, had all five starters contribute points in the first quarter. Abby Beyer registered seven of the Blue Jays' first nine points. Her jumper at 6:15 broke a 7-7 tie as Lydia Lawson found the sophomore for the bucket. Lawson assisted on E-town's next basket, which belonged to Martin, her first of nine made field goals in the game. Emma Hoesman hit a pair of free throws and finished out the first quarter assisting on the Jays' final two baskets; layups by Mikayla Ruth and Lawson.

Martin hit the offensive glass in the second quarter and made good on an and-one by hitting the ensuing foul shot after she was fouled by Courtney Adams. Her three-point play gave Elizabethtown its largest lead of the game to that point, 22-14.

Within the last four minutes of the first half, E-town had its lead extended to double digits when Julia Craig found Ruth for a lay-in. Craig and Ruth combined for seven straight points and Susquehanna (10-5, 1-3 Landmark) was held scoreless for nearly three minutes. The Jays led 35-24 at halftime.

The River Hawks were able to get the deficit down to single digits twice in the first five minutes of the third, but a 10-0 run initiated by Hoesman's layup blew the lead back up to nearly 20. By the end of the third quarter, in which E-town outscored Susquehanna 24-13, the Blue Jays held a 22-point advantage.

Elizabethtown led by as many as 28 in the fourth quarter and closed out the game with a 25-point win. Despite not hitting a shot from beyond the arc, the Blue Jays were efficient from the foul line (16-for-22) and shot over 50 percent on two-point field goal attempts. E-town shot 31-for-72 for the game (43.1%).

Martin's double-double was her 11th of the season and third in a row. Beyer finished with 13, Hoesman added 12, and Ruth supplied 11. Lawson and Craig each had nine apiece.

The women's basketball team remains on the road as they will head to Drew on Wednesday, January 18 to face the Rangers at 7 p.m.
