Jays' comeback falls short at Drew

MADISON, N.J. -- Elizabethtown went down by 13 points early in the fourth quarter before making a furious comeback bid Wednesday night at Drew. The Blue Jays' attempt to tie at the buzzer missed the mark and the Rangers escaped with a 56-54 Landmark Conference win.

Sophomore guard Abby Beyer jammed eight of her season-high 17 points into the final period, but Elizabethtown (11-4, 1-4 Landmark) could get no closer than two with 44 seconds left.

Martin, who hit 1 of 2 freebies to pull E-town within 56-54, came up with a critical block on Hannah Miller on the defensive end, but the ball sailed out of bounds and stayed with the Rangers (7-8, 3-2).

Miller misfired on a three, prompting Martin to grab her game-high 18th rebound of the night. It set the visitors up with a chance to tie or take the win on their final possession.

Emma Hoesman found the ball in her hands with time wearing thin. The junior's pull up jumper off the left elbow came up just short, allowing the Rangers to hold on for their second win at home against the Jays in three seasons since Elizabethtown joined the Landmark.

Mikayla Ruth scored all 11 of her points in the first half, when the two sides continually traded baskets. There were 11 lead changes --seven in the first quarter-- and neither team led by more than five.

That all changed in the decisive third.

Drew roared out of the locker room on a 12-0 run behind five points each from Michaela Keegan and Sam Lane to open a 44-32 lead.

The Rangers' lead would reach 14 before the hosts took a 49-38 lead to the final period after outscoring E-town 17-6 in the third.

Beyer hit a pair of triples in the fourth and finished 4 of 7 from 3-point land on the night.

Martin dominated the boards, pulling within 27 of 800 in her career, but the senior center was held to a season-low 11 points on 3 of 14 shooting. She is 43 points shy of 1,000 heading into Saturday afternoon's 2 p.m. home affair with Goucher.

Ruth finished with 11 points after being held without a shot in the second half. Julia Craig scored seven points and had two blocks off the bench.

Drew won the rebound battle, 36-33, holding the Jays to their third lowest total this season. Elizabethtown shot 36.7 percent (18 of 49) overall and 61.9 percent (13 of 21) from the foul line.

Drew's Miller would lead all scorers with 18 points, but did so on 20 field goal attempts. Keegan joined her teammate in double figures with 10.

Lane and Courtney Trzasko had nine points apiece, Ryan Jackson eight and Ally Raulf 11 boards for the Rangers.
