Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nine Blue Jays contribute in big win over Goucher

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- It was a game the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team absolutely needed in order to keep pace for a playoff spot in the Landmark Conference. Nine Blue Jays played in Saturday's 82-37 rout of Goucher, including the first career points for Jill Freeman. Abby Beyer had the hot hand for E-town with a game-high 23 points. Mikayla Ruth and Julia Craig were also in double figures for the Jays in the victory.

Elizabethtown (12-4, 2-4 Landmark) was down 5-1, but held Goucher (4-13, 0-6 Landmark) scoreless for nearly six minutes. E-town took advantage of the Gophers' drought and went on a 13-0 run. Ruth had the first five points for the Blue Jays to tie the game at 5-5. Emma Hoesman capped off the run with her first of a season-best two three-pointers that made it 14-5 with 2:18 left in the first quarter.

Craig brought the energy off the bench and it was her three-point play that gave Elizabethtown its largest lead of the game to that point at 18. Craig drove the lane, got bumped, but finished the layup after taking the contact. She made the ensuing foul shot and E-town led 27-9 with 5:16 remaining in the second.

Emily Martin finally got her first bucket of the game at the 2:23 mark of the second, going hard to the hoop after taking a delivery from Hoesman. The Goucher defense collapsed on Martin at the high post every time she touched the ball, but with other players like Beyer and Ruth hitting from the field, the Jays were easily able to handle it despite the defensive focus on Martin.

The Gophers had cut the lead back down to 12 with a minute and a half left in the first half, but a trey from the sophomore made it 15. Goucher turned the ball over and on the Jays' next possession, Beyer grabbed an offensive board and got the put-back to go. E-town ended the half on an 8-0 run and Jenny Welch sank a jumper with just a second showing on the clock to send EC into halftime ahead 38-19.

Where Ruth dominated the score sheet in the first half, 10 points and 7 rebounds, Beyer got hot over the course of the second half to the tune of 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting.

The Collegeville, Pa. native was involved early in the third quarter, scoring seven of the first nine points for Elizabethtown. She had 12 of her 14 second-half points in the third as E-town blew the game wide open and led by 27 after three, 56-29.

The lead got to as many as 42, but Lydia Lawson's third and final steal of the game led to Freeman's and-one play with 36 seconds left. Freeman sank her lone foul shot for the final points of the game and E-town enjoyed its largest win of the season, 82-37.

Hoesman and Lawson were tasked to defending one of the Landmark's top scorers, Briana Bull, and held her to just eight points on 4-for-22 shooting. Katie Pacak had a team-high 14 for the Gophers. Beyer led the Blue Jays with 23 points, her first 20-plus point game of the season. She hit three treys and shot 10-for-19 overall. Ruth had a season-best 17 and Craig added 11 off the bench. As a unit, E-town shot almost 48 percent from the floor and made 12 of 16 free throws.

The Jays also controlled the glass, outrebounding Goucher 52-30. Points off turnovers also played a key part in the game as EC generated 24 points off 16 Goucher turnovers.

The women's basketball team will head to Juniata to face the Eagles on Wednesday, January 25 at 7 p.m.
