Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ruth reigns over Eagles in win for women's basketball

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team came out like gang busters in Wednesday night's Landmark Conference win at Juniata. The Blue Jays scored over 20 points in each of the first two quarters and led by 26 at the half en route to a 74-63 win over the Eagles. Mikayla Ruth led all scorers with 21 points.

Abby Beyer assisted on Emily Martin's made jumper on Elizabethtown's (13-4, 3-4 Landmark) first possession, though Katy Leamer put Juniata ahead by one after sinking a trey at the other end. The Eagles all of 19 seconds before Lydia Lawson's layup that gave E-town the lead for good.

Juniata (9-9, 1-6 Landmark) was within four at 9-5 with 6:53 left in the first quarter until the Jays went on a 10-0 run covering over five minutes of game clock. Veronica Cosmopolis brought the Eagles' drought with a layup at 1:22, but E-town was already up double digits by that point. EC led 24-7 after the first.

Beyer's three in the second quarter put Elizabethtown up by 18, its largest lead to that point. Beyer, Ruth, and Martin combined to score 15 of the team's 21 second-quarter points and totaled 32 of E-town's 45 first-half points.

The trio shot 12-for-21 from the floor (57 percent) and as a team, the Jays were 17-for-30. They held Juniata to just 7-for-33 shooting (21.2 percent) over the first 20 minutes.

Up by as many as 29, the lead was large enough that even though Juniata's shooters woke up in the second half to the tune of 50 percent shooting, the deficit was too much to overcome.

The Eagles sliced into the lead and trailed by 20 after the third, 61-41. By the end of the game, it was down to 11. E-town left with a 74-63 win and another big league victory.

Ruth posted double figures for the fourth consecutive game and recorded a season-high 21 points, the first 20-point game of her career. Beyer added 16, Martin finished with another double-double of 15 points and 13 boards, and Lawson posted 14 in the win. Emma Hoesman registered a team-high six assists while Julia Craig had four dimes.

Elizabethtown will remain on the road and travel to face nationally-ranked Scranton on Saturday, January 28 at 2 p.m.
