Men's basketball falls at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Scranton shot 62.7 percent from the floor and built a 23-point halftime lead in sending the Elizabethtown men's basketball team to an 81-48 Landmark Conference defeat Saturday afternoon.

Josh Eden put the Blue Jays ahead moments into the game and E-town (4-14, 1-7 Landmark) was within striking distance in a high-scoring opening five minutes.

When Matt Lapkowicz got all net on a 3-pointer from the top of the arc, the Blue Jays trailed 15-14 with 15:16 left in the first half.

The Royals (14-5, 6-2) took over from there, scoring 12 consecutive points and piecing together a 21-4 run over the next 9:45 for a 36-18 advantage.

Scranton's inside and outside games were each working in ryhthm. Ethan Danzig buried three early 3-pointers and Mitch Cross had two. When the perimeter threats were taken away, the Royals found John Vitkus for 14 first-half points on 6 of 6 shooting.

Vitkus (game-high 18 points) and Danzig (15) led four Royals in double figures. Drew Schankweiler and Kyle DeVerna each had 10.

Elizabethtown was unable to recover from the Royals' onslaught. The guests trailed 45-22 at half and got no closer than 22 the rest of the way.

Eden led the Blue Jays with 12 points and sophomore Matt Thomas was a perfect 4 of 4 for eight. Connor Moffatt came off the bench to grab five rebounds and score four points.

The Blue Jays shot over 40 percent, making 20 of 49 field goal attempts, but they were just 2 of 11 from deep.

Elizabethtown heads to Drew Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
