Gettysburg gets past Blue Jays late, 24-16

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Gettysburg took advantage of a hole in Elizabethtown's lineup to pull out a late victory over the Blue Jays, 24-16, Friday evening at Thompson Gymnasium.

The Blue Jays' harnessed their third lead of the night, 16-15, when Rocco Hladney notched a commanding 13-1 major decision over Austin Roskos at 184 pounds, but without the services of nationally-ranked Luke Fernandez at 197, Gettysburg (7-2) stole six crucial points towards the outcome.

Junior Philip Torresani and fifth-year senior Bryan Pflanz set a positive tone early for the Blue and Gray.

Torresani's late takedown of Lenny Ogozalek at 125 lbs., provided the only scoring in the first period. Ozozalek, 16-7 on the season and coming off back-to-back wins by fall, got the takedown back in the second, but Torresani sandwiched a pair of escapes around it for a 4-2 lead through five minutes of wrestling. The Blue Jay junior was able to ride Ogozalek out in the third for a 5-3 win, improving his season record to 15-7.

Pflanz, an Honorable Mention pick in the latest d3wrestle.com rankings, registered a four-point near fall on Noah Malamut with just over a minute remaining in the second period of their 133-pound bout. Pflanz maintained that 4-0 edge deep into the third, before the referee hit him with three straight penalty points for stalling. In the end, it wouldn't matter, as the Hatfield, Pennsylvania, product prevailed 4-3 for his 17th win of the year and a 6-0 Elizabethtown lead.

Gettysburg evened the match with decisions from Anthony Alexandrou at 141 and Traken Sutton at 149, but Chris Kummerer put a brief halt to the Bullets' momentum.

Kummerer attacked Henry Scavone at 157 from the opening whistle, scoring 10 points in the first 1:27 on a takedown and three near falls. He then got a coveted pin, his second of the season, at 2:53, moments before the period was set to expire.

The Bullets again countered, tying the score at 12 with a pin by Quinn Merrigan 3:18 into the 165-pound match. Gettysburg then took its first lead of the night, 15-12, on a 9-4 decision from Dan Ebert at 174.

Hladney used four takedowns of Roskos to give the Jays a lead once more, but the forfeit at 197 and a 3-1 sudden victory from fifth-ranked Paul Triandafilou in the heavyweight match proved too much for Elizabethtown (2-10) to overcome.

E-town will take a break from its dual schedule and make its annual trek to Wheaton, Ill., for the Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational on Jan. 27-28.
