Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Balanced scoring powers Rangers past men's basketball

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The second half of Wednesday night's Landmark Conference matchup between the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team and visiting Drew was dead even, but the five-point hole the Blue Jays were in at the half turned out to be the margin of defeat as the Rangers utilized five players in double figures to get by E-town, 69-64. Josh Eden led all scorers with a game-high 13 points.

Drew (9-7, 3-2 Landmark) led 13-6 out of the gate through the first four minutes, hitting three early three-pointers. Darius Reiter hit a pair and Yonathan Napoleon drilled another. A dry spell from the field allowed Elizabethtown (3-12, 0-5 Landmark) to close the gap and eventually take the lead.

Peter Harding connected on two treys, his only two of the game, and Eden's layup gave E-town at 16-15 lead with 11:55 to go in the first half. The teams battled back and forth and it wasn't until the 3:56 mark of the first half that either team could make it more than a three-point lead on the other. A pair of foul shots by Chatham Studer put Drew up by four, 33-29.

Studer got the Rangers' lead back up to seven with 31 seconds left in the half, but Jamil Pines-Elliott drove down the lane with time winding down and sank a last-ditch layup before time ran out to make it 39-34 at the half.

Napoleon extended the lead back to seven on the first shot of the second half, but a 6-0 run from the Blue Jays made it just a one-point game. Matt Lapkowicz's layup, a jumper from Jake Sweger just inside the three-point arc, and a Lapkowicz steal and fast break lay-in had the Jays within 41-40 with 16:15 to go.

The game remained no more than a two-possession affair until leading scorer Riley Collins drained a three to put Drew back up 66-58 with 3:30 left. Bryce Greene hit back-to-back layups for Elizabethtown that closed the gap to just four.

On a key possession with less than two minutes, Napoleon hit a decisive three-pointer as the shot clock nearly expired on the Rangers. His trey gave the Rangers a seven-point cushion with 1:23 in the second half. Eden hit a shot down low, but it was too late as Drew was able to hang on for the 69-64 win.

E-town held Collins in check, as he finished with just 10 points (season average of 16). Joey Feinberg and Napoleon each had 11, while Collins, Reiter, and Studer each had 10 apiece. Eden's 13 were the game-high. Lapkowicz followed with 12 and Connor Moffatt added 10 points and eight rebounds.

The men's basketball team will remain home and host Goucher on Saturday, January 21 at 4 p.m.
