Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late stops get men's basketball much needed win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Ethan DuBois' late steal resulted in an easy layup for the freshman to give the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team a four-point lead late in the game. After a few stops in the final minute, the Blue Jays were able to snap their eight-game skid and come away from Saturday's game with Goucher with their first Landmark win of the season. Josh Eden led all scorers with 23 in E-town's 70-62 win.

Eden was a huge factor through the first 13 minutes as the senior had scored all 15 of Elizabethtown's (4-12, 1-5 Landmark) points up to the 6:41 mark of the first half. Eden went 6-for-7 from the floor in the first 20 minutes and the Jays trailed Goucher (4-13, 1-5 Landmark) 21-15.

E-town was down six after Bryce Greene's jumper, but back-to-back treys from Matt Lapkowicz and Greene squared the game up at 23-23 with 4:54 remaining in the half. The teams would tie three more times over the course of the final four minutes. The Gophers got the lead up to four, but Peter Harding's three-pointer with 24 seconds to go brought the Jays back within one at the break, 30-29.

The senior leaders of the team, Eden, Lapkowicz, and Harding, led by example over the final 20 minutes. The trio combined to score 29 of the team's 41 second-half points, but it was also the timely play of some underclassmen that put Elizabethtown in a position to snap the eight-game slide.

Lapkowicz scored the first eight points by either team of the second half and in the blink of an eye, a one-point deficit had turned into a seven-point lead for the Blue Jays. A few quick buckets from Goucher got the visitors back within one, and they would later tie things up at 40-40 with 14:48 remaining in regulation.

Elliott Wiley put the Gophers up by a bucket with 7:21 to go, but on the Jays next possession, Matt Thomas came through for his team. The shot clock was under ten and the ball was in Harding's hands in the corner. He passed back out to Thomas, who had taken position just outside the arc on the right wing. Knowing it was about to expire, Thomas released a three-pointer and beat the shot-clock buzzer to give Elizabethtown the lead, ultimately for good.

Eden's layup with 2:55 left had EC up by four, but after a steal by Tre Galloway III, Dwayne Morton once again made it a one-possession game.

In the waning moments of Saturday's conference contest, an E-town turnover gave life to Goucher with 1:01 to play and the Gophers able to take the lead on the ensuing possession. DuBois then made the play of the game as he baited the ball handler into a turnover on the Elizabethtown side of the court. DuBois picked up the loose ball and went in easily for the fast break layup that put EC back up by four.

Jake Sweger grabbed the defensive board as Galloway missed a jumper and on the other end, DuBois found Eden down low for another easy bucket as E-town sensed the victory was in hand. After another missed shot by the Gophers, Harding went to the line and sank a pair of foul shots. The Gophers turned it over to follow, and after the Jays got the ball back into play to Harding, he was fouled once again. The senior sank a second set of free throws and despite Galloway's layup with eight seconds left, Elizabethtown ran out the remainder of the clock to claim the win.

Eden finished 9-for-11, including one three-point basket, and had a team-high nine boards. Harding and Lapkowicz had 14 apiece and combined to sink five treys in the game.

The men's basketball team will host Juniata on Wednesday, January 25 at 7 p.m.
