Men's basketball drops Landmark game at No. 11 Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Elizabethtown put in a gritty effort Saturday at 11th-ranked Susquehanna, but the River Hawks array of offensive weapons, led by Steven Weidlich's 20 points, pushed the hosts to a 73-61 victory over the Blue Jays.

Bolstered by five 3-pointers, including three from senior sharpshooter Matt Lapkowicz, Elizabethtown stayed within striking distance of the River Hawks (13-2, 3-1 Landmark) prior to halftime.

The Blue Jays shot 43.3 percent and were down only eight, 30-22, after Bryce Green went coast-to-coast with 8:13 left in the first.

Greene collected seven of his 11 points in the first half.

During its current seven-game losing, Elizabethtown has found its opponents getting too many easy buckets. It would plague the Jays again Saturday.

Susquehanna found plenty of open lanes and shots in knocking down 55.6 percent of its shots in the first half.
The River Hawks would go 27 of 54 for the game, becoming the third straight team to shoot 50 percent or better against E-town and eighth in 14 games.

Conversely, Elizabethtown hasn't shot 50 percent in any game, though Saturday's 42.4 percent performance (25 of 59) was its fourth consecutive game shooting above 40 percent.

Eight different players found the scoresheet for the Blue and Gray (3-11, 0-4) in the second half as it matched Susquehanna point for point.

The River Hawks' 12-point halftime cushion proved to be enough, however. Elizabethtown could never seem to work itself out of a 10 to 15-point deficit in the second half.

Weidlich drained 7 of 14 shots and 4 of 8 from 3-point range to top all scorers. Fellow SU starters Dalton Reichard (12 points) and Ryan Traub (10) were also in double figures.

Danny Weiss put forth 10 points and seven boards off the bench. Tyler Hoagland had six points and five assists.

Lapkowicz was held to just two points in the second half, but did add four assists and four steals to his 13-point afternoon. Fellow senior Josh Eden scored six points and had seven rebounds to finish with 14 and 10 for his fifth double-double of the year.

Peter Harding added eight points and Connor Moffatt six for E-town.

The Blue Jays return to Thompson Gymnasium Wednesday night at 7 to face Drew University.
