Christman doubles up Gwynedd Mercy in double OT win

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. -- It took double overtime to decide a winner Saturday afternoon between the Elizabethtown College field hockey team and Gwynedd Mercy. Emma Christman scored 1:25 into the second overtime period to lift the Blue Jays to a 2-1 victory on the road.

Both teams had chances in the first ten minutes of the game, but Elizabethtown's (2-4) Margo Donlin and Gwynedd's (4-2) Samantha Soscia stopped two shots each to keep the non-conference contest 0-0.

Christman recorded goal No. 3 of the season 18:08 into the first half unassisted with a shot from inside the shooting circle to make it 1-0 in favor of the Jays.

Donlin made one last first-half save with over ten minutes remaining, but would not have to make another the rest of the half. Hannah Mack came on to begin the second half.

The Griffins came to play right out of the break, giving Mack plenty of work. Gwynedd finally broke through at 49:03 on a goal from Melissa Russo to knot things up at 1-1.

Gwynedd seized control in the middle stages of the second half. In a two and a half minute span, GMC put six penalty corners into play, but the Jays' defense did not allow a single shot off of any of the six.

Brianna O'Connell had a golden opportunity to put her team ahead with 5:29 remaining in regulation on a stroke, but Mack stood tall and saved the would-be game-winner.

Donlin reentered the game to start overtime and would make another huge stop for Elizabethtown. With only 34 seconds to go in overtime and the game on the line, Donlin stoned Abigail Gabriel on a stroke to ensure a second overtime for E-town.

It would turn out to be the play of the game as a deflection came to Christman in the second OT period. She eluded the on-rushing goalie, dribbled around her, and dumped the ball into the cage to send Elizabethtown home with a double overtime victory. It was her second of the game and fourth of the season.

Donlin and Mack combined to make 13 stops in goal for the Blue Jays.

The field hockey team returns to Wolf Field to host York (Pa.) on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 4:30 p.m.
