No. 4 Ursinus survives scare from Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Three of the first four games for the Elizabethtown College field hockey team have ended in 2-1 score lines, and unfortunately for the Blue Jays, they were on the losing end of another one of those. E-town battled fourth-ranked Ursinus for 70 minutes, but the Bears would hang on for a 2-1 win at Wolf Field Wednesday evening.

Elizabethtown (1-3) pressured for an early goal, garnering a penalty corner 3:46 into the game, but Nicole Leaf's chance off the corner was blocked.

On the other end, Ann Kopera delivered a penalty corner for Ursinus (3-1), but Katelyn Hauck's shot attempt went right of goal.

Hannah Mack started for the Blue Jays and kept the game scoreless 12:25 into the first half with a kick save on Brooke Overly's shot.

The Bears would beat the sophomore goalie with 20:43 gone. Amber Steigerwalt got in behind the defense and made it to the middle of the shooting circle before lifting a shot over Mack's pads and into the cage to open up the scoring.

E-town would get a lift from a freshman duo late in the first half. Olivia Beachley sent a ball in from deep in the Ursinus end and the onrushing Madison Kubik got her stick onto the ball and directed it into an open cage for the first of her career to knot the game up 1-1.

Elizabethtown and Ursinus went into halftime tied 1-1.

After an early chance by Leaf was blocked, the Bears clamped down on the Blue Jays, not allowing the hosts another shot attempt the remainder of the game.

Gemma Dufoe would put Ursinus in front with what proved to be the game-winner with a little over five minutes gone in the second half. She picked up a loose ball on the left side of the cage and her shot found the back of the cage to put the Bears in front 2-1.

Margo Donlin played the second half for the Jays and made six saves. Mack had three in the first half.

The field hockey team plays at Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday, September 17 at 3 p.m.
