Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey doubled up by No. 5 Franklin & Marshall

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team opened up the season against nationally-ranked No. 5 Franklin & Marshall, the sixth straight season the teams have faced off with one another. The Diplomats surged to a two-goal lead in the first half and while the Blue Jays would get one back in the second, F&M hung on for a 2-1 road win at Wolf Field Thursdays afternoon. Megan Eppley scored for E-town.

Franklin & Marshall (1-0) spent a good portion of the opening half pressuring the Elizabethtown (0-1) cage. Margo Donlin was forced into three early saves to keep the contest level. Two of those saves came on back-to-back shots off an F&M penalty corner.

The Diplomats were able to break through on a third shot as Annie Horsley collected her initial shot and put home the rebound attempt, avoiding the many bodies in front to send the visitors ahead 1-0.

The Jays settled into the game and created a few scoring opportunities of their own. Nicole Leaf blasted a shot from the right center of the shooting circle that was saved with a right pad by Ilianna Santangelo. She made a second save on Addie Stang half a minute later.

Franklin & Marshall converted another penalty corner into a goal at 20:26 of the first half. Katherine Kistler took a feed from Horsley and pushed the ball toward goal. Melanie Consiglio deflected the ball onto the stick of Phoebe Wood, waiting at the back post, to tuck the ball into the cage and put F&M ahead 2-0.

E-town had two more penalty corners in the half, but couldn't find a way to cut into the lead. Charity Good and Halley Donlin had shots saved by Santangelo as the Jays went into the break still down 2-0.

Leaf was denied twice by the Diplomats' sophomore goalie to open the second half as the Blue Jays were able to produce two penalty corners in the early going.

While the shots weren't able to find the cage, E-town remained composed and continued to battle for the ball. It would pay off a little over ten minutes into the final half of play when Eppley was able to beat Santangelo to the lower left corner of goal to halve the lead. Leaf fed Eppley on a penalty corner as the junior midfielder awaited out at the top of the shooting circle.

It is said that teams are most vulnerable to giving up a goal right after they have scored one, and Franklin & Marshall looked to make that happen, jumping right back on the forefront of the action down in the E-town end.

The Blue Jay defense was unwavering and stood tall as the Diplomats pushed for a third goal. Three straight corners produced just one shot for the visitors, and that shot was saved by Hannah Mack, who came on at the start of the second half. Mack would make a total of three saves.

In the end, Elizabethtown just couldn't find that last breakthrough to tie up the game as F&M hung on for the 2-1 win.

Santangelo stopped six shots for her first win of the year while Donlin and Mack combined to make seven saves.

The field hockey team will face Muhlenberg on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m.
