Gulla pitches Blue Jays into Landmark Championship

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With Elizabethtown's season on the line and no margin for error, senior pitcher Nick Gulla turned in the best game of his career. Gulla tossed a complete game 3-hit shutout to eliminate Moravian, 3-0, Monday afternoon and send the Blue Jays to their first Landmark Championship series.

Gulla, a Lansdale, Pa., native has grinded through the good and bad baseball can offer up over the course of a season and a career. When Moravian salvaged a 12-9 win in game two Sunday, the veteran knew the ball would be his in Monday's win-or-go home game three.

Elizabethtown (25-18) took advantage of a Greyhound miscue in the top of the first to score the game's only run over the first eight innings.

Aaron Rahn's 2-out grounder to short was thrown away by Evan Kulig, allowing Richy Masciarelli to trot home for a 1-0 lead.

Gulla flew through the first in five pitches and did not allow a hit until the third inning when catcher Mike Roethke doubled to lead off.

The second-seeded Greyhounds (22-21) put runners on second and third with just one out in the frame, but Gulla dug deep. He struck out Austin Markowski and got hard-hitting third baseman Alex Bull on a groundout to shortstop Nick Lorenz.

Moravian starter Ian Carbone matched Gulla by posting zeros in the second, third, fourth and fifth. Carbone lasted 5.2 innings, giving up just the one unearned run in the first inning. He walked four and struck out four, while also allowing four hits.

The Hounds tried mightily to put the pressure on E-town, but the Jays –especially their righty on the mound– would not break. Moravian got a runner to third base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but came away with no runs.

Gulla and Bull had another showdown with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but Bull could only tap one back to the E-town pitcher to end the threat.

Cameron Leon made his way to third in the sixth before Gulla fanned Chase Rogers to retire the side.

In the the eighth, Moravian showed little patience against Gulla. Bull led off by flying out to left fielder Dylan Manning on the first pitch he saw. Charles Savite and Leon also went quickly, as the Blue Jay senior worked through the heart of the Hounds' lineup.

Elizabethtown provided Gulla a bit of breathing room in the ninth, scoring twice against Dan Morrin for a 3-0 lead.

Masciarelli drew a lead-off walk and Colby Smith executed the hit-and-run to perfection, putting runners on the corners with nobody out. Smith stole second, before Rahn and Manning came up with back-to-back sacrifice flies.

Gulla surrendered a 1-out walk to pinch-hitter Logan Welles in the ninth, but got the very next batter, Roethke, to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to send the Jays to their first Landmark Championship series next weekend at Susquehanna.

Gulla, who has started 16 games over the last four season, registered the first complete game and shutout of his career. He struck out four and walked four, advancing his record to 4-2.

Kyle Fackler was 2-for-3 and Andrew Coleman 2-for-4, as the Jays scattered their seven hits among five players. Masciarelli scored twice and Smith went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Fackler now has 63 hits on the season, seven away from tying Andy Barrick's single-season record of 70.

Elizabethtown, which will play for its first conference title since finishing as Commonwealth Conference runners-up in 2011, has won 11 league crowns in its 83-year history, with the most recent one coming in 2009.

The third-seeded Blue Jays open their best-of-three championship series at top-seeded Susquehanna Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
