Blue Jays drop game one of Landmark championship series, 4-2

SELINSGROVE, Pa.  – All season long Kevin Elwell has been picking up the Blue Jays.

Now, his teammates need to return the favor.

Susquehanna broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and went on to a 4-2 victory over Elizabethtown in game one of the Landmark Conference championship series Friday afternoon.

Elwell, attempting to tie Gary Yeager Jr.'s single-season school record of 11 wins, fell for the first time in nine starts, regular season or postseason, against a Landmark opponent. He labored through 6.1 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on 11 hits.

The top-seeded Crusaders (27-14) loaded the bases in the bottom of the first on singles by Josh Cimino and Zach Leone, and a Matt Cassinelli base on balls.

Dylan Jenkins was hit by Elwell to force in the first run of the afternoon, but the E-town (25-19) pitcher got Bryan Palsi to ground into a 5-2-3 double play to avoid further trouble.

Elizabethtown countered Susquehanna's early run with one in the top of the second. Frank Ragozzino's sacrifice fly scored Aaron Rahn to tie the game at one.

The teams traded runs once more, with SU getting a sac fly from Landmark Player of the Year Justin Cassinelli in the second and the Blue Jays' Kyle Fackler scoring on an error in the top of the fifth.

Elwell ran into trouble again to start the sixth, as Palsi and Taylor Luckenbill connected on back-to-back doubles. Luckenbill's scored Palsi for a 3-2 Susquehanna lead. Two batters later, Danny Gordon shot a ball up the middle to plate Luckenbill with an insurance run.

The Blue Jays could not sustain any pressure against the Crusaders' Nathan Madden, who went the distance. Fackler drew a walk to lead off the seventh and Brennan Snyder was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth, but Elizabethtown went hitless over the final three innings.

Smith had Elizabethtown's only two-hit game and the Jays were held without an extra base hit for the second game in a row.

Madden walked two and struck out five in his complete game victory that put the Crusaders on the brink of their second Landmark title. Elizabethtown faces a must-win tomorrow in game two to force a deciding game three Sunday.

Leone was 3-for-4 for SU, while Jenkins and Luckenbill each had two hits.

Due to the weather forecast for the weekend, the teams altered the series schedule. Tomorrow's game will start at 4 p.m., and if necessary, game three would be Sunday at 11 a.m.
