Season comes to an end for Blue Jays in Landmark Championship

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Elizabethtown College baseball team saw its season come to a close with a 10-4 loss in the Landmark Championship at Susquehanna Saturday afternoon.

The Crusaders, 4-2 winners in game one Friday, won the best-of-three series, 2-0, to capture the second league championship in program history.

Elizabethtown (25-20) finally solved SU pitcher John Cooley in the sixth inning when Nick Lorenz and Brennan Snyder knocked in runs to turn a 2-0 deficit into a tie game.

Top-seeded Susquehanna responded in short order, scoring three times in the bottom of the inning. Danny Gordon's 2-run single put the Crusaders (28-14) ahead 5-2.

Colby Smith pulled E-town back within 5-4 on a 2-run single to the gap in left center in the top of the seventh, but it was as close as the Jays would get.

Down 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth, tournament MVP Zach Leone hit an opposite field 3-run home run to push Susquehanna's lead to five. The Crusaders would score eight of their 10 runs on the afternoon during their final three innings of at bats.

Junior center fielder Richy Masciarelli had a huge afternoon with his first career 4-hit game (4-for-5). The Pottstown, Pa., product doubled twice, scored twice and also stole a base.

Smith finished 2-for-5 with a run and 2 RBIs, and eight of the Blue Jays' nine batters had at least one hit.

Leone drove in a game-high three runs, all on the eighth-inning homer, while going 2-for-5 with a pair of runs for the champion Crusaders. Dylan Jenkins, Bryan Palsi, Glassmire and Gordon all had two hits for SU, which outhit E-town 13-12.

Anthony Lippy suffered the loss for the Jays, giving up four runs on seven hits across 5.1 innings. Lippy settled in after SU scored twice in the bottom of the first to shut down the Crusaders over the next four innings.

Josh Kwak came on for two-thirds of an inning. Seniors Sean Jones and Zack Tomasko each tossed an inning to close it out.

Susquehanna's starting arm, Cooley, went 5.2 innings, allowing a pair of unearned runs and striking out five. Closer Liam Conboy picked up the win with 2.1 scoreless frames and three strikeouts.

Saturday marked the final game in Blue and Gray for 11 seniors: Nick Gulla, Sean Jones, Zachary Karasek, Dylan Manning (1-for-5), Aaron Rahn (1-for-5), Ryan Schamp, Ryan Shirk, Jay Singer, Josh Sollenberger, Zack Tomasko and Joseph Williams.

The 2016 season was one of Elizabethtown's best, offensively speaking, in recent memory. The team's 456 hits, 1,470 at bats, 95 doubles and 630 total bases were the highest totals since digital statistics started being kept in 2002. The Jays' 336 runs were tied with the 2009 team's for most in a season during that time frame as well.

Junior Kyle Fackler set a single-season school record by playing in his 45th game Saturday. He was the only Blue Jay to start and play in every game this season.

Fackler also set a single-season record with 173 at bats, while putting up the third most hits (64) and joining the top 10 with 49 runs scored (fifth) and five triples (tied for seventh). Masciarelli's 50 runs scored are fourth most in a season and mark the highest total by a Blue Jay since Adam Sheibley scored 53 in 2009.

Smith (42) and Rahn (41) each topped 40 RBIs in a season, placing them seventh and tied for eighth, respectively. Smith's 57 hits placed him ninth on the program's single-season list and Rahn's 16 doubles are tied for sixth.

On the mound, Kevin Elwell posted a 10-2 record, tying him for the second most wins in a season.

Tomasko's four saves rank tied for sixth and Kwak's 17 appearances tied for ninth.

Elizabethtown's 25 victories are its most in a season since 2009 (29-15) and its 45 games played are a new school record, surpassing 44 in 1994 and 2009.
