Blue Jays' semifinal series at Moravian going the distance

BETHLEHEM, Pa.  – Elizabethtown's offense punctured Moravian for season-highs of 18 runs and 21 hits to win the opener of their Landmark semifinal series Sunday, 18-3. The Greyhounds forced a decisive game three, however, holding on 12-9 in game two.

GAME 1
Elizabethtown 18, Moravian 3

E-town and Moravian finished with identical 14-7 records in conference play during the regular season, but the Hounds won 2-of-3 against the Jays to earn home field advantage in a rematch of last year's semifinal.

Junior pitcher Kevin Elwell, a perfect 7-0 against Landmark oppoennts this season, pitched into the seventh inning to earn his 10th win of 2016, but left with a comfortable lead after watching his offense put forth its best showing of the year.

Colby Smith and Aaron Rahn drove in runs ahead of a 3-run home run off the bat of Dylan Manning, the first of his career, as the third-seeded Blue Jays (24-18) broke a scoreless tie with a 5-run third inning against Moravian's Rhett Jacoby.

Jacoby held Elizabethtown to one run on four hits during game two of the teams' doubleheader back on April 2 in E-town, but got rocked for season-highs of nine runs (all earned) and 12 hits over six innings Sunday.

Elizabethtown increased its lead to 7-0 in the sixth when Kyle Fackler's single up the middle scored both Brennan Snyder and Frank Ragozzino.

An inning later, three more runs crossed the plate for a 10-0 advantage. Snyder hit a 2-run double off Bryan Schoch (both charged to Jacoby) and freshman Andrew Coleman plated Snyder on a groundout to third.

Manning, who was 4-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored, added a 2-run single in an 8-run eighth that put the game well out of reach for Moravian. Coleman delivered the knockout punch with his first career home run, a 3-run shot, over the wall in left center.

Elwell moved into a second-place tie with Derik Aasan on the Blue Jays' single-season pitching wins list. The Clarks Summit native is the first E-town hurler since Aasan in 2000 to win 10 games. If the Blue Jays are fortunate enough to reach next weekend's championship series, Elwell would likely get his shot to tie Gary Yeager, Jr.'s school record of 11 wins in a season.

Elwell went 6.1 innings, Sunday, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out three.

Fackler posted four hits in six at-bats with two RBIs and two runs scored. Coleman knocked in four, while Aaron Rahn (3-for-4) scored three times.

In all, seven of the nine starters had multi-hit games and seven scored multiple runs.

Alex Bull and Charles Savite helped Moravian score a pair of runs in the seventh with RBI hits.

Josh Kwak relieved Elwell, striking out three and giving up a lone run in 2.2 innings.

GAME 2
Moravian 12, Elizabethtown 9

Playing with desparation and the reality of their season on the line, the Greyhounds got to Anthony Lippy for six runs in the bottom of the first. The deficit proved too much to overcome for the visitors.

Lippy retired the first two batters he faced, but Bull's double started a run of six straight hits for Moravian, capped by Mike Roethke's 3-run home run.

E-town halved the lead with three runs in the fourth. Dylan Manning singled in Fackler and Nick Lorenz sliced a 2-run single down the left field line. But, Moravian came right back with two in its half of the fourth and tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth.

The Blue Jays tried to make a run late. They scored six of the final eight runs from the sixth inning on, including three in the ninth, but could not make it all the way back.

Lippy had given up just one run in each of his last two starts and four of his last six, but struggled with the Hounds (22-20) for the second time this season. The sophomore righty gave up eight runs (all earned) on 10 hits over four innings, though he did register four strikeouts.

Manning continued his recent tear at the dish, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. The multi-hit game was the East Petersburg, Pa., product's fifth in his last six games. Manning finished Sunday's set 7-for-10 with seven RBIs and four runs scored.

Smith also had three hits (3-for-5) for E-town, with Richy Masciarelli and Coleman providing two each. Smith and Rahn each collected their 40th RBI of the season in game two, becoming the the Blue Jays' first 40-RBI duo in the same season since Chris Turtell had 50 and Chris Romig 45 in 2000.

Elizabethtown has eight players with 20 or more RBIs this season, also a team-best going back more than 15 seasons.

Eleven of the Blue Jays' 12 hits against Moravian pitchers Ryan Kahn, Anthony Zaloga and Hunter Guard were singles.

Kahn picked up the win, allowing four runs in 5.1 innings. Cameron Leon and Chase Rogers accounted for eight of the Hounds' 18 hits, both enjoying 4-hit games.
