Baseball scores early and often in 13-7 win at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Elizabethtown bolted to a 7-0 lead after three innings and never looked back Friday, winning the first of three critical Landmark Conference games over Juniata, 13-7.

Freshman Derek Manning hit his first career home run, a two run shot, with two outs in the sixth off of Jesse Bealer and Nick Lorenz added a solo blast, his first of the year, to lead off the eighth as the Blue Jays (13-12, 5-5 Landmark) improved to 3-1 in Landmark series openers this season.

E-town turned three hits and an Eagle error into three runs in the top of the first. Aaron Rahn knocked in a run on a two-out single for career hit No. 97. The Blue Jays tacked on three more runs in the second, building on Kyle Fackler's one-out triple with RBI singles by Richy Masciarelli and Derek Manning.

Seven of Elizabethtown's 12 hits were recorded in the first two innings.

A sacrifice fly from Lorenz put the Jays up 7-0 in the third and starting pitcher Kevin Elwell was once again cruising against a Landmark foe.

Elwell held the Eagles (7-19, 3-6 Landmark) to one run on three hits through five innings. He struck out a career-high seven and did not issue a walk for the fourth time in eight starts this season.

The Clarks Summit product looked untouchable halfway through, but Juniata pieced together five consecutive singles against him to start the sixth, spelling the end of his afternoon. Still, Elwell was able to get the win and improve his record to 6-1. He continues to lead the Landmark in victories.

When all was said and done in the sixth, the Eagles, led by first-year coach and former Blue Jay Adam Sheibley '09, scored four runs on six hits to creep within 10-5.

Lorenz's round-tripper was part of a two-run eighth for the Jays. The visitors capped the scoring with one run in the ninth.

Nick Gulla struck out three in two innings of relief for Elizabethtown, Josh Kwak worked the eighth and Zack Tomasko struck out the side in the ninth.

Beeler fell to 2-5 by allowing 11 Elizabethtown hits and 10 runs in six innings.

Masciarelli went 3-for-5, scored three times and drove in two. The junior produced his second straight three-hit game and now has five RBIs in his last two.

Fackler also scored three times, moving within one run of becoming the 16th player with 100 runs scored in his Elizabethtown career.

Derek Manning knocked in a team-high three and Colby Smith walked twice and scored twice. The top four in the order: Fackler, Masciarelli, Smith and Derek Manning were a combined 8-for-17 with nine runs.

Juniata outhit the Jays 14-12, with Isaac Kline's three pacing the hosts, but the Eagles committed five errors, threw a wild pitch and allowed two passed balls.

The teams will try to get their doubleheader in Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
