Blue Jays suffer OT defeat to Neumann

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - 60 minutes was not enough time to decide a winner between the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team and visiting Neumann Wednesday afternoon at Wolf Field. The team were deadlocked at 13-13 after two halves of play. The Knights would score with 1:46 left in overtime to emerge the 14-13 victor.

Katie Thompson gained possession of the opening draw control and Elizabethtown (4-6) was into the offensive end of the field first, looking to score. Megan DeMichele had the Jays' first shot attempt, but Neumann (8-3) goalie Becca Wallace made the save and kept it 0-0 with only 21 seconds off the clock.

Jordan Hopkins, the Knights' leading scorer, began the game's scoring with a goal at 26:44, her first of four on the day as Neumann grabbed the 1-0 lead. A minute later, the lead was gone as the Thompsons connected for E-town's first of the game. Carly Thompson found Katie Thompson for her seventh of the season.

Addie Stang put the Blue Jays up 2-1 with 23:27 to go in the first half on a free position, her first of two in the game and 22nd on the season. She remains one shy of 100 for her career.

Elizabethtown went up 3-1 after Mary Nell Donahue found the net, taking a feed from Allison McLamb. Over the following three minutes, however, Neumann scored twice off the stick of Rebecca Dolenti to tie it up at 3-3.

Up 7-5 with five minutes left in the opening half of play, Abby Kopytko made several crucial saves to keep the Jays ahead by two. After Julia Ferrante made it 7-5, Kopytko came up big on Hopkins' free position, making one of her career high 14 saves. 45 seconds later, the freshman goalie made back-to-back saves on Taylor Klever and Dolenti.

Elizabethtown was up by the same score at halftime.

The Knights climbed back in front with the first three goals of the second half to take an 8-7 lead. From there on out, neither team led by more than a single goal.

Dana Robidoux and Ferrante scored consecutive goals at 17:24 and 14:20 that give E-town its first lead (11-10) since the 25:28 mark of the second half.

Kaitlyn Conrad scored twice in a row in the final five minutes to put Neumann back in front, but Katie Thompson would bring the Jays level with 1:17 left in regulation to force overtime.

After the first three minutes went scoreless, Kopytko faced a free position, but kept the game going with her 14th save of the contest. Neumann forced a turnover off the save and got possession of the ball back and would eventually score the golden goal for the win.

Carly Thompson led Elizabethtown with three goals and two assists. Ferrante, Katie Thompson, Robidoux, and Stang had two goals each. Donahue and McLamb added one apiece.

E-town will travel to face Goucher on Saturday, April 9 at 12 p.m.
