Moravian holds off Blue Jays 11-8 in series finale

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Aaron Rahn's two-run home run started a four-run eighth inning for Elizabethtown Sunday, but it wasn't enough to erase a sizable Moravian lead. The Blue Jays dropped their Landmark series finale with the Greyhounds, 11-8, at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium.

Moravian freshman Mike Mittl homered twice, doubled and drove in six runs as the Greyhounds kept control of second place in the conference standings.

The afternoon started with a strikeout of lead-off hitter Anthony Gaetaniello for E-town pitcher Anthony Lippy, but the next batter, Mittl, hammered the Blue Jay sophomore's 1-0 pitch onto the hill in left field for an early 1-0 lead.

Lippy settled down, retiring the next five batters in order, but a single by Tim Heard to start the third ended up with Lippy in hot water again.

Evan Kulig walked and some small ball by the Greyhounds (12-11, 6-3 Landmark) allowed Mittl to drive in Heard on a groundout. Austin Markowski took advantage of a stiff wind blowing out to left, cracking a two-out, two-run shot -one of three Moravian home runs- to put the Jays in a 4-0 hole.

Elizabethtown (12-12, 4-5), which had runners on first and third in the bottom of the first, only managed two hits against Moravian starter Anthony Zaloga through four frames, but got things going in the fifth.

Kyle Fackler singled home Frank Ragozzino with the Blue Jays' first run and Colby Smith added a two-run single back through the box to trim Moravian's lead to 5-3.

Smith became just the third Blue Jay to reach the 30-RBI mark in the last six seasons, joining Dillon Tagle (30 in 2013) and Luke Gatti (40 in 2015).

Mittl struck again in the top of the sixth with a two-run double just inside the bag at third that negated the dent E-town had put into Moravian's lead half an inning earlier. The right fielder would tack on a two-run bomb in the eighth and Charles Savite added an RBI single for the visitors.

Richy Masciarelli had an RBI single in the seventh for the Jays and a two-run single in the eighth. Masciarelli finished with a team-high three hits (3-for-5) and three RBIs.

Rahn homered for the second time this season and fourth in his career, in the eighth. The Blue Jays cut the Greyhounds seven-run lead to three with the big inning, but went down 1-2-3 against Dan Morrin in the ninth. Morrin earned his first save of the year.

Zaloga worked into the seventh, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits and striking out four in his third win of the season.

Lippy was saddled with the loss. He gave up seven runs, five of which were earned, on nine hits in six innings. The Hanover native had allowed just one run over his last 13 innings entering Sunday's game.

Nick Gulla yielded four runs on six hits over two innings, while Josh Kwak struck out one in a scoreless ninth.

Mittl was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, Markowski 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, and Gaetaniello 2-for-5 with three runs, as Moravian's 1-3 hitters combined to go 7-of-14 with seven runs and eight RBIs.

Eight of the Greyhounds nine hitters had at least one hit and the visitors outhit E-town 16-10. Heard racked up a team-high four (4-for-5).

Elizabethtown, which gets York (Pa.) next, Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Boyd Stadium, received multi-hit efforts from Fackler (2-for-4), Masciarelli (3-for-5) and Smith (2-for-4).
