Messiah pen puts hold on Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Messiah pitchers held Elizabethtown to a single hit over the final five innings Wednesday to snap the Blue Jays' three-game winning streak, 6-4, at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium.

Ryan Shirk and Colby Smith sandwiched RBI singles around a two-run Richy Masciarelli triple in the fourth inning, when E-town (21-16) scored all of its runs against Falcon starter David Nicolais.

Nicolais was effective in keeping the home team off the scoreboard over the first three innings, allowing just two hits. The Falcon hurler looked poised to close out the fourth after retiring two of the first three Blue Jays he faced, but Ryan Shirk punched a single into left to score Nick Lorenz with E-town's first run of the afternoon.

Shirk's hit started a run of five straight Blue Jays reaching base. Nicolais hit Kyle Fackler with a pitch and then served up Masciarelli's triple to the gap in left center that brought home Shirk and Fackler.

Smith added a single back through the box to score the speedster, Masciarelli, and trim Messiah's lead to 5-4.

Nicolais didn't return for the fifth, but the committee of Tyler Moody, Quinton Kuntz, Jordan Nicholas and Matt Wright held Elizabethtown to one hit over four innings. Closer Drew Betz then retired the Blue Jays in order in the ninth to notch his fourth save.

Elizabethtown's pen was just as impressive against the Messiah (19-17) bats. Freshman Nate Baxter threw 2.1 scoreless innings and has not allowed a run in more than five innings to start his career. Sean Jones recorded a pair of outs and Zack Tomasko struck out two without giving up a hit as the Jays' relievers combined to toss four innings of scoreless, one-hit ball.

Messiah got all six of its runs (three earned) against starter Dylan Manning in the first five innings.

With two outs in the second of a scoreless game and runners moving on contact, Josh Hayner looped a single into left field that scored Colin Fry and Josh Good for 2-0 Messiah lead. One of E-town's three errors on the day allowed the visitors to make it 3-0 before the inning was through.

Andrew Eyester added a two-run double in the fourth and Good's sac fly in the fifth completed the scoring for Messiah.

Lorenz, Masciarelli and Smith guided the Blue Jays' offense with two hits. Hayner was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Falcons, who saw eight players combine for their nine hits.

E-town's Fackler drew a walk and was hit by a pitch twice, but was held without a hit for the first time in 23 games, going 0-for-2. Fackler's 22-game hitting streak entering Wednesday's game was the program's longest in more than 15 years. The junior second baseman kept his 29-game streak of reaching base safely intact.

The Blue Jays finish the regular season with a three-game Landmark series against Susquehanna at Boyd Stadium Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday's doubleheader with the Crusaders begins at 1 p.m., while Senior Day is tentatively set for Sunday at noon.
