Baseball puts heat on Susquehanna with sweep

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Superb pitching and timely hitting fueled Elizabethtown's sweep of Susquehanna Saturday on Senior Day at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium. The Blue Jays, 5-4 walk-off winners in game one, scored six runs in the first inning of game two in an 8-2 victory and remain alive in the chase for the Landmark Conference's No. 1 seed.

GAME 1
Elizabethtown 5, Susquehanna 4

Dylan Manning's one-out single back through the box capped a two-run seventh inning and sent the Blue Jays pouring out of the dugout in jubilation.

Elizabethtown (23-16, 14-6 Landmark) grinded all game. Kyle Fackler belted a lead-off double down the left field line and scored on a wild pitch for an early 1-0 lead, but the Crusaders scored three unanswered runs, taking a 3-1 lead on RBI singles from Matt Cassinelli and Bryan Palsi in the top of the fourth.

The Blue Jays wasted little time responding. Frank Ragozzino lined an RBI single to right to make it 3-2 and Ryan Shirk perfectly executed a squeeze play that brought Nick Lorenz home with the tying run.

Kevin Elwell held the 28th-ranked scoring offense in Division III to four runs on six hits and went the distance.

E-town had a prime opportunity to erase a 4-3 deficit in the bottom of the sixth, but with one out and the bases loaded, the Crusaders (24-14, 15-5) turned to closer Liam Conboy. Conboy, boasting a league-leading seven saves, struck out Shirk and Fackler to end the threat.

However, SU went back to Conboy in the seventh and this time the Blue Jays didn't pass up their opportunity.

Colby Smith singled and Aaron Rahn doubled to put the winning run in scoring position with one down. Conboy uncorked a wild pitch, allowing pinch-runner Jesse Campbell to cross home with the tying run. Manning then beat a drawn in infield with a chopper up the middle to score Rahn for the walk-off victory.

Elwell was dealing early, mowing down six Crusaders. He improved to 9-1 and Saturday marked his Landmark-best fifth complete game of the season. Elwell's nine wins are tied for the third most in a season in team history.

Four Blue Jays had two hits apiece: Smith, Rahn, Manning and Ragozzino. Rahn stroked his 15th double and Fackler hit his 13th.

Susquehanna got a home run from first baseman Dylan Jenkins, but no hitter had more than one knock in game one. Starting pitcher John Cooley lasted 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run (three total) on eight hits. Conboy suffered the loss with two runs allowed in an inning.

GAME 2
Elizabethtown 8, Susquehanna 2

Nick Lorenz mashed his first career grand slam and Aaron Rahn hit a two-run single as the Blue Jays hung six runs on the Crusaders in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

Anthony Lippy pounded the strike zone after a 25-pitch first inning and ended up turning in a masterful five innings. Lippy limited Susquehanna to one hit –a Justin Cassinelli third-inning home run– and struck out three.

After its huge first inning, Elizabethtown wouldn't score again until the sixth when Rahn singled in two more runs for a four-RBI game. Richy Masciarelli and Kyle Fackler both scored on the play, each player's second run of the game.

SU didn't score again until the seventh and was held to a mere three hits in the game. Josh Kwak relieved Lippy and went the final two innings.

E-town connected for 11 hits, as Masciarelli, Rahn, Manning and Brennan Snyder racked up multi-hit games.
