Baseball clinches postseason berth with 6-5 win at Drew

MADISON, N.J. – Josh Kwak pitched four strong innings out of the bullpen and Dylan Manning provided the go-ahead hit in the seventh as Elizabethtown held off Drew, 6-5, Sunday to sweep the series and clinch a spot in the Landmark Conference Championships.

Kyle Fackler increased his hitting streak to 22 games with a home run to lead off the third inning. Nick Lorenz also homered, his second in as many days, and Manning drove in three for the Blue Jays (21-15, 12-6 Landmark).

Elizabethtown can finish as high as first and as low as fourth in the conference. By sweeping the weekend against Drew, the Blue Jays ensured that the fifth-place Rangers (15-21, 8-10) can no longer catch them with three league games remaining.

Colby Smith put the Jays on the board in the first with a double to score Richy Masciarelli for his 37th RBI of the season, but Drew's Anthony Feltre answered with a lead-off home run off Nick Gulla to tie it at one.

The Rangers grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, and despite Fackler's second round-tripper of the year tying the game in the third, the hosts pushed two more runs across in the fourth for a 4-2 lead.

Drew starting pitcher Ryan Fitzpatrick struck out seven through four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth.

A one-out walk to Masciarelli and a single by Smith put the Jays in position to strike. Two batters later, Aaron Rahn was plunked by Fitzpatrick to load the bases.

Manning stepped in and pulled a game-tying base hit to right to score Smith and Brian Portillo. The senior from East Petersburg, Pa., would put Elizabethtown ahead 5-4 on a two-out single in the seventh that plated Rahn.

Kwak relieved Gulla in the fourth, giving the Blue Jays four terrific innings. Kwak held the Rangers to one run on two hits and struck out three to earn the win. It was the junior's first decision this season. Kwak is having an outstanding year, having allowed just four runs over his last 16 innings.

Lorenz's homer in the eighth turned out to be vital when Drew's Marc Cohen hit a solo shot in the bottom of the inning to bring the Rangers within 6-5. The Blue Jay shortstop has hit all three of his home runs this season against Landmark teams.

Sean Jones got the final out of the eighth before turning the ball over to Zack Tomasko in the ninth. Tomasko struck out the side for his fourth save.

Elizabethtown outhit Drew 13-10 Sunday, a day after the Rangers could only muster 11 hits in two games against the Jays.

Smith went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Fackler, Manning and Rahn collected two hits on the afternoon. Rahn hit his team-leading 14th double and Fackler his 12th.

Feltre, Bobby Miskura and Zach Lipshitz put forth two-hit games for the Rangers, while Tommy Broyles took the loss with six hits and two runs (one earned) allowed over four innings.

Drew's pitching combo of Fitzpatrick (eight) and Broyles (six) combined to strike out 14 E-town batters.

To claim the No. 1 seed and home field advantage in the Landmark Conference Championships, the Blue Jays must sweep current conference leader Susquehanna (15-3) at Kevin Scott Boyd Memorial Stadium next weekend.

Before it concludes the regular season against the Crusaders, Elizabethtown faces Messiah in a non-conference game at Boyd Stadium on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
