No. 11 Shenandoah prevails over Blue Jays in extra innings

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College baseball team trailed for most of its non-conference home matchup with No. 11 Shenandoah at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium Wednesday afternoon, but the Blue Jays scratched and clawed its way back into the game, eventually tying it and forcing extra innings. The Hornets produced a run in the tenth and got the final three outs to secure the win.

Shenandoah (28-8) was held scoreless by Dan Gittis through two innings, but got on the scoreboard in the third. Abel Arocho singled up the middle to score a run, which also loaded the bases for the Hornets. Jake Loew unloaded them with one swing of the bat, booming a grand slam over the right field fence to make it 5-0.

Kyle Fackler, who had left off the first inning for Elizabethtown (18-14) with an opposite-field single, did the same to begin the bottom of the third. Richy Masciarelli walked to put two on with no outs. Colby Smith's ground out moved both runners up a base and Brian Portillo followed with a two-RBI single he was able to punch through the right side. Aaron Rahn sent a double to the left center fence to score Portillo from first as E-town was back in it at 5-3.

Shenandoah put up one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to climb back ahead by five, 8-3, going into the bottom of the fifth frame.

The Jays were able to match the Hornets' two runs in the fifth with two of their own. Nick Lorenz scored on a wild pitch and Masciarelli was hit by a pitch on a 2-2 count with the bags full for the RBI.

Nate Baxter pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh for the Blue Jays and allowed E-town to get level with SU.

Ryan Shirk led off the rally with a single up the middle and advanced to second with Anthony Knight at the plate on a wild pitch. Fackler delivered an RBI single to left center, his third hit of the game, to bring home Shirk from second.

Smith drove in his team-leading 35th RBI of the year with a double down the left field as Fackler scored. Rahn was able to tie the game two batters later with a sacrifice fly.

Zeroes went up on the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings, but Shenandoah was able to come up with the clutch hit of the game. Joe Coleman singled to center with two outs and then stole second. Kevin Anderson had Coleman moving on Tristan Baker's single to right center and Coleman scored easily to move the Hornets back in front, 9-8.

Phil Morse closed out the tenth for his seventh save of the season.

Elizabethtown didn't go without its chances, leaving 15 runners on base over the ten innings.

Fackler and Smith led the Blue Jays with three hits apiece. Portillo and Rahn both had a team-high two RBIs, while Fackler, Masciarelli, and Smith each had one.

The Jays will be right back in action tomorrow for a make-up game with York (Pa.) at 4 p.m.
