York steals one from Blue Jays in extras

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown played extra innings for the second day in a row, but left Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium absent a victory. Seth Brosius hit a solo home run in the top of the 11th to power visiting York past the Blue Jays, 6-5, Thursday.

Brosius put his prints all over the outcome of the makeup non-conference game, which was originally postponed on April 7.

The Spartans' catcher punched a single between first and second in the top of the ninth against E-town (18-15) closer Zack Tomasko to score Sean Mohollen and tie the game at five.

In his next trip to the dish, Brosius sent a two-out offering from Jay Singer over the wall in left for a 6-5 lead.

Elizabethtown got a lead-off single in the bottom of the 11th from junior third baseman Colby Smith, but two batters later, Aaron Rahn hit into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play. The Blue Jays fell in extra innings for the second day in a row after being nipped by nationally-ranked Shenandoah, 9-8, in 10, Wednesday.

Kyle Fackler extended his career best hitting streak to 19 games with an RBI double down the right field line in the bottom of the second. Fackler compiled a team-high three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs. His 19-game hitting streak is the longest in more than a decade, going back to 2004 when Dean Whetham hit safely in 19 straight.

The Blue Jays scored four straight runs between the second and third innings to take a 4-1 lead over the struggling Spartans (9-25-1). A Brian Portillo double and Nick Lorenz sacrifice fly plated runs for the hosts in the third.

York scored twice in the sixth to tie the game at four, but E-town got a run in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead.

Fackler's two-out slow roller to first pulled Spartan first baseman Steve Miller into no-man's land between first and second, and the E-town junior raced in ahead of Miller's toss to pitcher Scott Steffy, who was attempting to cover, as Lorenz crossed home with the lead run.

Brosius' homer in the 11th was York's 21st of the season as a team, which ranks in the top 35 nationally among Division III teams. It also made a winner out of Will Grega, who held the Jays without a run on two hits in 1.1 innings.

Bobby Kuehn started for YCP and went five, giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits. Steffy struck out four over the next 4.2 innings and allowed just the eighth inning run.

Dylan Manning tossed five innings of five-hit ball for Elizabethtown, but did not factor into the decision. Josh Kwak got the Blue Jays out of a jam in the sixth and worked three scoreless innings of relief.

Portillo was 2-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored for E-town. Catcher Frank Ragozzino went 2-for-3 with a run scored before being lifted for pinch-runner Doug Hook in the bottom of the 10th.

With Hook on first, James Kantner smacked a two-out double to the gap in right. Quick retrieval kept the speedy Hook at third. York intentionally walked Fackler and Grega got Brennan Snyder to pop up to second to extinguish the threat.

Brosius tortured E-town all afternoon, registering a game-high four hits (4-for-5). He knocked in two and scored three times. Brayden Lackey had three RBIs for the Spartans.

Elizabethtown will travel to Madison, N.J., this weekend for a critical series with Landmark foe Drew. The Blue Jays enter the weekend a game up for second place in the conference. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
