Baseball wins game one in extras, splits with Moravian

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Kevin Elwell's third complete game and Colby Smith's walk-off single in extra innings led Elizabethtown to a 3-2 win in game one against Moravian Saturday at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium. The Greyhounds were firing on all cylinders in game two, taking it 14-1, to earn the split.

GAME 1
Elizabethtown 3, Moravian 2 (F/8)

Elizabethtown was rewarded for its stellar defense and timely hitting with its fourth Landmark win of the season against a Moravian team that came into the weekend with the second best record in the conference.

Every time Moravian threatened, the Blue Jays' (12-11, 4-4 Landmark) defense came up big. Center fielder Richy Masciarelli threw out the go ahead run at home for the second out in the top of the third, and the E-town offense responded with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Derek Manning doubled down the left field line and scored when the Jays' next batter, Aaron Rahn, drilled a two-bagger to the gap in left center for his 19th RBI of the season.

The Jays doubled their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Brian Portillo led off the inning with a single up the middle. Opting to insert speed into the lineup, coach Cliff Smith turned to Jesse Campbell. The former wide receiver at Hershey High School and Towson University moved up to third when Greyhound pitcher Ian Carbone threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt.

Dylan Manning singled to center, bringing in Campbell and pushing E-town's lead to 2-0.

The Greyhounds forced extras in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third and two outs, Anthony Gaetaniello's RBI single plated Charles Savite to make it 2-1. A wild pitch from Elwell allowed pinch runner La'Ron Smith to score the tying run.

The Jays worked some extra inning charm, however. A Nick Lorenz single and Kyle Fackler double put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Moravian decided to intentionally walk Masciarelli to set up a force at any base, but took their chances with the wrong guy. Smith, entering the weekend hitting .500, singled in Lorenz to make a winner out of Elwell for the fifth time this season.

Eight of the Blue Jays' starting nine were able to get a hit and help Elwell's cause. The Clarks Summit native allowed six hits and struck out two, while lowering his earned run average to 2.77. Elwell is tied atop the Landmark with five victories and three complete games.

Smith finished game one 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Fackler was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks.

Carbone lasted 5.1 for the Greyhounds (11-11, 5-3 Landmark), walking two and striking out three. Hunter Guard took the loss. Gaetaniello went 1-for-4 with an RBI and shortstop Joey Ferolie went 2-for-2 at the plate.

GAME 2
Moravian 14, Elizabethtown 1

Moravian opened game two on fire, scoring 13 runs in four innings. That was plenty for pitcher Rhett Jacoby, who tossed a complete game four-hitter for the Greyhounds.

Masciarelli's third inning triple to deep left center was his sixth extra base hit of the season, but the Blue Jays' only extra base hit of game two. Masciarelli scored on Smith's single later in the inning, as this week's Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week bumped his league-leading RBI total to 28.

All nine Moravian starters recorded a hit in the second half of the doubleheader. Austin Markowski had three hits and four RBI's, including a solo home run in the top of the fifth.

Sean Jones fell to 1-3 on the year, as the Hounds collected nine runs off the senior in 2.2 innings. Fackler's lead-off single in the bottom of the first extended his season-long hitting streak to nine games.

Jacoby struck out six to earn the win on the bump for Moravian, improving to 4-1 on the year.
