Baseball blasts Merchant Marine

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown tied its season-high with 17 to earn a monstrous 17-1 victory over Merchant Marine Sunday, while its two closest competitors in the Landmark Conference playoff race faltered.

Nick Gulla threw six scoreless innings and matched a career-high with six strikeouts. The Blue Jays (18-13, 9-6 Landmark) picked him up with a nine-run third that the Mariners would never recover from.

Brian Portillo gave E-town a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI double that plated Colby Smith. Gulla zipped along through three before the Jays trotted 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third.

Things started to unravel for Mariners' (9-19, 5-10) starter Nathan Slusarczyk when he yielded a pair of one-out, bases loaded walks to Portillo and Aaron Rahn. Brennan Snyder unloaded them with a 3-run double to the gap in left that helped E-town seize a 6-0 lead.

Nick Lorenz singled in Snyder, two runs came across on a USMMA error and Richy Masciarelli and Kyle Fackler executed a double steal to cap Elizabethtown's second-highest scoring inning this season.

Gulla allowed just five hits, all singles, and blanked Merchant Marine over six innings. The Blue Jays extended their lead to 12-0 in the sixth on an RBI single from Andrew Coleman and a Fackler RBI double.

Braden Stinar relieved Gulla and struck out one in a scoreless seventh, while Joe Williams kept the Mariners off the board in the eighth. Zachary Karasek pitched the ninth, striking out one and allowing a run.

Elizabethtown's offensive outburst continued in the eighth as the hosts scored five times with reserves dotting the lineup. Freshman Doug Hook recorded his first career hit and RBI. Classmate Nate Baxter walked twice and scored the first run of his career.

Rahn and Snyder knocked in three runs apiece. Fackler (2-for-5), Masciarelli (2-for-4) and Snyder (2-for-6) all finished with multi-hit performances.

Heightening Elizabethtown's victory was the fact that Moravian and Scranton, the two teams tied for second in the conference standings with the Blue Jays entering play Sunday, fell in their series finales.

Slusarczyk gave up eight runs (seven earned) on five hits over 2.1 innings to take the loss for USMMA. The bullpen couldn't save Slusarczyk, allowing nine runs (four earned) on eight hits over the final 5.2 frames.

Elizabethtown faces nationally-ranked Shenandoah Wednesday at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
