Game Recap: Baseball |

Elwell moves to 7-1, Jays trade wins with Merchant Marine

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.  – Kevin Elwell moved into sole possession of first in the Landmark Conference with his seventh win of the season and Elizabethtown baseball divided Saturday's doubleheader with Merchant Marine. The Blue Jays took game one, 3-2, but the Mariners hit a late home run to claim game two, 4-3, at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium.

GAME 1
Elizabethtown 3, Merchant Marine 2

Junior right-hander Kevin Elwell held the Mariners to two runs on six hits over 6.1 innings to win his fifth straight start and post his sixth quality start in eight tries.

Elwell retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings, and attempted to finish off his fourth complete game of the season, before USMMA (9-18, 5-9 Landmark) got two runners on in the seventh.

Zack Tomasko struck out Alex Gambino and Sean Jones got Tyler Mowry to fly out to right for his first save of the year.

E-town's offense was held in check for most of the game. The hosts didn't get a runner over to third against Mariner pitcher Patrick Morgan until the bottom of the fourth and didn't finally break through until the bottom of the fifth.

Kyle Fackler's one-out triple, his league-leading fifth, set up Richy Masciarelli's RBI single to center that tied the game at one.

The Blue Jays (17-13, 8-6) took the lead an inning later when Aaron Rahn, coming off his 100th career hit against Albright Wednesday, doubled in pinch-runner Brennan Snyder after Brian Portillo led off with a walk. Rahn eventually scored on a squeeze bunt by Frank Ragozzino, an insurance run that proved to be of the utmost importance.

Merchant Marine would score once in the top of the seventh, but Jones shut the door and the Blue Jays kept pace with Moravian and Scranton for second-place in the conference standings. Both the Greyhounds and Royals do hold tiebreakers over E-town, however.

Rahn was the only Blue Jay with a multi-hit game, as he was a perfect 3-of-3 with a run batted in and a run scored. E-town had seven hits to USMMA's six and left seven runners on base, while the Mariners stranded six.

Elwell kept the ball in play, but Merchant Marine could do little with it. The Clarks Summit native gave up six hits and two runs in his start, while not walking or striking out a batter.

Morgan struck out six and allowed three runs on seven hits while going the distance. The Mariners got RBIs from Matthew Thomson and Bryson Campbell.

GAME 2
Merchant Marine 4, Elizabethtown 3

Braden Barnett's second home run of the game, this one on the first pitch of the seventh inning, lifted the Mariners to a 4-3 victory in game two and spoiled Elizabethtown's chance at a sweep.

Barnett finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs to lead the way for USMMA.

E-town never led in game two, but fought back to tie it twice. In the bottom of the third, Fackler singled home Ragozzino to tie it 1-1. Then in the fifth, Colby Smith's RBI single scored James Kantner to knot things at three.

Smith is currently ranked second in the conference with 34 RBIs this season.

Anthony Lippy was solid, posting five strikeouts and no walks in six innings. He allowed four runs on eight hits, but took a tough loss after giving up Barnett's homer in the seventh.

Josh Kwak got the Jays out of the seventh without further damage, but USMMA's Andrew Spinnenweber induced three straight groundouts to put the Mariners in the win column.

Spinnenweber was superb as well, fanning eight in a complete game seven-hitter.

Rahn added two more hits and, for the second time Saturday, was the only E-town player with multiple hits. Fackler, Smith, Ragozzino and Kantner had the remaining four of E-town's seven knocks in the nightcap.

ON DECK
Elizabethtown and Merchant Marine return to Kevin Scott Boyd Memorial Stadium at noon Sunday to put a wrap on this weekend's series.
