Rahn registers 100th hit, Blue Jays pull away from Albright late

READING, Pa. – Derek Manning's bases-clearing double in the top of the eighth broke a 6-6 tie and started a 6-run inning for Elizabethtown Wednesday evening against Albright. The Jays would score nine times over the final two innings to pull away for a 15-6 victory at Owls Field.

Though the Manning brothers are at opposite ends of the spectrum in their careers: older brother Dylan Manning writing the final chapter and Derek just beginning, both played pivotal roles in the win over the struggling Lions (4-19).

Derek's 3-run double to the wall in left center proved to be the turning point for the Blue Jays (16-12). Dylan struck out three over 2.2 scoreless innings to collect his second win of the season.

Senior right fielder Aaron Rahn joined the 100-hit club during E-town's 6-run eighth when he swatted an RBI double to left two batters after Derek Manning had broken the tie. Brennan Snyder drove in Rahn and pinch runner Doug Hook to cap the scoring for the Blue Jays in the inning.

Things got worse for Albright in the ninth. Four walks in the inning helped the Blue and Gray tack on three more runs and send nine guys to the plate. Elizabethtown had already batted around when 11 guys came to the dish an inning earlier.

The Lions blew through 10 pitchers on the night. They got to E-town starter Jay Singer for three runs in the first and grabbed a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third after the Jays had responded with three in the top of the inning. Kyle Fackler and Derek Manning each drove in a run as the Blue Jays made their way back.

Elizabethtown, which is hitting .313, on the season was over .400 Wednesday evening. Fackler went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Nick Lorenz tripled as part of a 3-for-3 effort, and Derek Manning also had three hits to go along with a game-high four RBIs. Snyder tied a career-high with 3 RBIs.

Starting with freshman Braden Stinar, E-town's bullpen managed to keep the Albright bats relatively silent. Stinar, Josh Kwak, Dylan Manning and Sean Jones combined for 11 strikeouts while allowing just four hits and three runs over the final 8.1 innings.

Albright's pen, meanwhile, found it a grind to throw strikes. Starter Connor Travis didn't allow a walk in his three-inning stint, but the nine relievers after him issued eight walks to the Blue Jays.

The Lions' turned to Philip Angelastro with two outs in the top of the seventh, and he got Frank Ragozzino swinging. When he returned to the bump for the eighth, E-town shelled him for four runs on three hits.

With a 12-6 lead after eight, coach Cliff Smith inserted a number of reserves into the lineup. Ryan Schamp and Nick Bein both recorded hits in the ninth, with Bein driving in a run. Andrew Coleman earned his first career RBI by drawing a bases loaded walk. Freshman Jesse Campbell scored a pair of runs after replacing Derek Manning as a pinch runner in the top of the eighth.

The 15 runs scored by Elizabethtown Wednesday night are tied for its second most in a game this season. Playing on the field where the Commonwealth Conference Championships were held for many seasons, the Blue Jays and Lions combined for 24 hits –17 off the bats of the Blue Jays. Of Albright's seven hits, four came from center fielder Jeff Yordy, who finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Elizabethtown brings in Merchant Marine for a Landmark Conference series Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
