Lynchburg holds off Blue Jays

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. – Lynchburg only led for 14 minutes Monday night against the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team, but that was enough to defeat the Blue Jays 9-6 at Havre de Grace High School.

Mary Nell Donahue and Addie Stang each scored twice for E-town, which dropped its third game in a row.

Lynchburg improved to 2-2 on the season with the victory.

Elizabethtown (1-3) built three different two-goal leads in the first half, but could not carry that momentum over to the final 30 minutes, as the Hornets outscored the Jays 4-1 after halftime.

Havre de Grace graduates Carly Thompson and Katie Thompson made themselves right at home, with Katie feeding Carly for her seventh goal of the season just 31 seconds in.

Donahue snuck into the middle of the field and fired home a pass from Stang to make it 2-0 Blue Jays with just 3:15 gone by.

Katie Thompson assisted on three of E-town's five first-half goals. She set up Dana Robidoux at 22:00 to give the Blue and Gray a 3-1 lead and picked up the helper on Stang's goal at 17:45 that made it 4-2.

Laura Meisner, Caroline Carozza and Kat Francis found the back of the net for Lynchburg in the final 18:29 of the half to deadlock the game, 5-5, at intermission.

It wasn't until Carozza scored her second of the night with 14:12 remaining that the Hornets seized their first lead of the contest, 7-6.

Alexa Carey and Helen Boniface added insurance goals for Lynchburg.

Junior midfielder Allison McLamb caused five turnovers, while Stang and Katie Thompson forced three apiece. The two teams combined for 41 giveaways in the game.

Elizabethtown outshot Lynchburg 20-15 and held a 13-4 advantage in draw controls. Carly Thompson was instrumental in both of those things happening with game-highs of seven shots and six draws.

Treva Tyson made nine saves for the Hornets, while freshmen Abby Kopytko stopped four for E-town.

Stang, who had two goals and two assists, moved to within a point of 100 in her career.

The Blue Jays will try to get going in the right direction Saturday when they host Washington & Jefferson at 4 p.m.
