Portillo goes 4-for-4 in win over Penn State Harrisburg

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Brian Portillo was a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish with four runs scored against Penn State Harrisburg Tuesday. Elizabethtown opened an 8-run lead before defeating the Lions 11-7 at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium.

The Blue Jays built a 7-0 lead after five innings on the strength of a 3-run third and a 4-run fifth. They traded zeros with the Lions over the first two innings, but got the offense cranking in the third.

Kyle Fackler led off with a triple and scored on James Kantner's sac fly. Kantner hit a towering fly to center, but it was dropped, the first of four Penn State Harrisburg errors on the afternoon. Kantner was thrown out at third on the play trying to advance.

A double from reigning Landmark Athlete of the Week Colby Smith plus a single and advance by Portillo had the Blue Jays in business with runners on second and third with just one out. Dylan Manning's RBI groundout and a wild pitch by Lions' starter Cole Backenstose that allowed Portillo to score the first of his four runs bumped E-town's (11-10) lead to 3-0.

For the second week in a row, coach Cliff Smith rolled out a bullpen game for his pitching staff in a non-conference contest. It worked to the tune of a 3-0 win at Dickinson last Tuesday and through five innings it was going smoothly against the Lions (12-15).

Daniel Gittis started and struck out two over two hitless innings. Nick Gulla tossed the next three, also fanning two without giving up a hit. Gulla got the win when E-town took the lead for good in the third.

Elizabethtown put the Lions in a deeper hole by scoring four times in the fifth. Brennan Snyder walked with the bases loaded, Ryan Shirk hit a 2-run double and Frank Ragozzino added a sac fly to extend the Jays' lead to 7-0.

Penn State Harrisburg answered with three in the sixth, but the Blue Jays pulled away once again with a Dylan Manning RBI single in the sixth and three runs in the eighth.

With the victory, E-town improves to 17-2 in 19 all-time meetings with the Lions. Smith continued to rake, going 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored.

Portillo's four hits and four runs scored were both career-highs. The junior first baseman had just eight hits in each of his first two seasons, but is now 12-for-30 (.400) with eight runs and nine RBIs as a junior.

Manning had two hits, while Fackler, Shirk and Ragozzino all had one. The Blue Jays finished with 11 hits in the contest, the 10th time in 21 games they've accumulated 10 or more.

Freshman Braden Stinar threw a scoreless seventh inning and was one of seven arms the Blue Jays trotted out to the mound against the Lions.

Backenstose took the loss for PSH, giving up three runs, but just one earned, in 3.1 innings. The Jays got to Backenstone's replacement, Nick Domenici, for four runs in less than an inning, before Kenny Mott came on to turn in three effective innings.

Offensively, the guests spread their nine hits among nine different players. Leadoff hitter Blake Reiff had a double, RBI and two runs scored.

Elizabethtown returns to Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium to host Moravian Saturday and Sunday in a Landmark Conference series. Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
