Baseball takes series from Catholic with game two win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Derek Manning's two-run double in the bottom of the first gave Anthony Lippy enough run support to cover a 3-1 game two victory for the Elizabethtown College baseball team against Catholic Saturday afternoon at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium. The Cardinals won game one, 4-1.

GAME 1
Catholic 4, Elizabethtown 1

Catholic's three-run fourth inning broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the visitors to their first Landmark Conference win of the season.

Dylan Manning brought home Kyle Fackler with a sacrifice fly in the Blue Jays' first at-bats, but Elizabethtown (10-10, 3-3 Landmark) found it difficult to get the offense going consistently against CUA starter Colin Kelly over the next six innings.

Kelly went the distance, striking out six and walking one while giving up just five hits.

Fackler hit a leadoff double that hooked into the right field corner, but it would be the Jays' only extra-base hit of the game. Kelly wouldn't allow more than one Elizabethtown hit in an inning until the bottom of the seventh when Derek Manning and Brian Portillo recorded singles to bring Frank Ragozzino to the plate as the potential tying run.

Kelly would get the Blue Jay catcher to pop to short, withRyan Tracy fighting the sun and a light breeze to make an over the shoulder catch to end it for the Cards (8-11, 1-5).

Fackler was 2-for-3 with a run scored for E-town, while Derek Manning went 2-for-2 with a walk. Sean Jones struck out three and allowed eight hits over five innings in the loss. Freshman righty Mike Garvey threw two scoreless frames out of the pen, striking out one and giving up one hit.

Danny O'Hagan, John Palladino and Tracy all drove in a run for CUA. Palladino and Stefan Poggioli were both 2-for-3.

GAME 2
Elizabethtown 3, Catholic 1

Anthony Lippy turned in his second straight stellar start and Zack Tomasko shut the door as the Blue Jays fought back from the game one setback to even their season and conference records with a 3-1 victory.

Lippy held Dickinson scoreless across four innings in last Tuesday's 3-0 win and the Cardinals found it equally difficult to solve the sophomore from Hanover Saturday.

Elizabethtown raced out to a 2-0 lead after one after Derek Manning roped a two-run double to left that scored Fackler and Colby Smith.

Lippy put a single and a Blue Jay error in the top of the first behind him to silence the Cardinals for much of the afternoon. He retired 10 straight batters before walking Anthony Ferlise to start the seventh, which brought his day to a close.

Zack Tomasko relieved Lippy and immediately got Poggioli to ground into a fielder's choice for the first out. The Cardinals would make things interesting with a double by pinch-hitter Brennan Cotter and an RBI single from Paul Burmester, but Tomasko locked in to strike out Brett Padula and Palladino for his third save of the spring.

Six players accounted for Elizabethtown's seven hits, with Aaron Rahn the lone player to register a multi-hit game (2-for-3, R). Outside of Cotter and Burmester, who recorded their hits against Tomasko, only designated hitter Jake Crist could claim hits off of Lippy (two singles).

Jon Mierzwa steadied Catholic with five strikeouts over three innings of relief. Karan Sinha started but got the hook after allowing three hits and two runs while walking three in less than three innings. Sinha was dealt his second loss of the season.

ON DECK
Elizabethtown continues its longest homestand of the 2016 season with a non-conference game against Penn State Harrisburg Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
