Jays pound out hits, Elwell controls Catholic in 14-4 win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College baseball team turned Good Friday into a great one after exploding offensively for the second straight game. E-town racked up 19 hits as it went on to defeat Catholic 14-4 in the opener of the three-game set at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium.

Kevin Elwell (4-1) took the mound for Elizabethtown (9-9, 2-2 Landmark), seeking his second straight win after posting a W six days ago at Scranton. He allowed a two-out solo homer in the top of the first, but quickly settled into the game and held Catholic (7-10, 0-4 Landmark) to just five hits over eight innings of work.

After Elwell struck out the side in the second, E-town got its bats going in the bottom half of the inning. Derek Manning led off with a double and his brother, Dylan Manning, moved him up to third with a sac bunt. Aaron Rahn knocked in De. Manning from third with an RBI single to left, his first of four hits and four RBIs in the game.

Brian Portillo followed up Rahn with a base hit of his own up the middle. Rahn and Portillo advanced a base on a wild pitch and Frank Ragozzino was able to bring in Rahn to make it 2-1 Blue Jays.

Another 1-2-3 inning from their ace, the Jays put up a four-spot in the third. The bases were loaded for Rahn, who shot the ball through the left side of the infield for a one-out, two-RBI base knock scoring Richy Masciarelli and Colby Smith. Portillo added a two-run double down the left field line to push E-town further ahead, 6-1.

Nick Lorenz hit the base of the center field fence to lead off the fourth with a triple. Kyle Fackler sent a 1-2 pitch into right field to score Lorenz as Elizabethtown produced at least a run for the third straight inning and were up 7-1 going into the fifth.

The Cardinals got one run back in the sixth on an RBI single from Bailey Lewis. Elwell got Anthony Ferlise to fly out to right to end the threat with a runner at third.

E-town put together another big inning in the sixth with four more runs. Smith, De. Manning, and Dy. Manning added RBIs, as did Rahn. They led 11-2 going into the seventh.

Elwell continued to shut down the Catholic line up, inducing two ground outs and a lineout to Lorenz at short for a quick top of the seventh inning. The Blue Jays went right back to work for their ace, adding three runs in the seventh on Smith's three-run homer to left field. It was Smith's second homer in as many days and third in the last four games. It kept his RBI streak at six games as the junior now has 26 for the season.

Elwell came out after one batter in the ninth inning and finished with four strikeouts in his eight frames of work. Josh Kwak pitched the ninth for the Blue Jays to secure the final three outs.

Elizabethtown will continue its series with Catholic tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
