Baseball falls 18-14 in slugfest at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. – Elizabethtown and Scranton swapped runs faster than Wall Street traders move stocks Wednesday. James Kantner hit the Blue Jays' third grand slam of the series, but the Royals walked away with an 18-14 win in the rubber match.

Colby Smith continued to make himself at home at Scranton's Connell Park, drilling a two-run home run in the top of the first. Smith hit one of E-town's two grand slams in Saturday's 15-2 game two win over the Royals.

Elizabethtown (8-9, 1-2 Landmark) doubled its lead on a two-run two-bagger from sophomore Brennan Snyder later in the inning.

The Royals (7-7, 2-1) responded with a five-run bottom of the first, which included the first of their three homers, a three-run shot from Patrick Mergel.

Kantner ripped the first pitch he saw from Pat Rohr over the wall in right center for a two-out grand slam that put E-town back in front, 9-5, in the top of the second. The home run was the first of Kantner's career. Snyder followed with his second double in as many innings, ending Rohr's day.

Scranton's starter was battered for nine runs, all earned, on nine hits in 1.2 innings, but he wouldn't factor into the decision after his team came back with two in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth to take a 15-10 lead.

Elizabethtown didn't keep the Royals off the board until the sixth, but the hosts were right back at it in the seventh with two more runs increasing its advantage to 17-10.

Aaron Rahn and Brian Portillo singled in runs as part of a four-run eighth that signaled Elizabethtown's last gasp comeback effort. The Jays also scored runs on RBI groundouts from Kantner and Snyder, but could get no c loser.

Kantner drove in a career-high five runs, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Smith was 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs, marking his seventh multi-RBI game of the year. No other Blue Jay has more than four.

Center fielder Richy Masciarelli scored four times, while Portillo crossed the plate twice and knocked in two for the Blue and Gray.

Dylan Manning got the start for Elizabethtown, but could not escape the third. He allowed 10 runs on eight hits, but only two of the runs were earned due to a pair of Blue Jay errors. Nick Gulla took the loss with five runs allowed over 3.2 innings.

Wednesday was not a day to remember for either pitching staff. The offenses combined for 37 hits, five home runs and 16 extra-base hits.

Scranton's leadoff hitter, Zach Dignam, finished 4-for-5 with a double, home run, four runs scored and three RBIs. Tommy Trotter and Anthony Simone also had four-hit afternoons. Simone drove in four and Mergel tied E-town's Kantner with a game-high five ribbies.

Brian Markowski, who relieved Rohr in the second, was the only hurler to enjoy any success. He went four innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out five to pick up the victory.

Elizabethtown opens a three-game Landmark Conference set with Catholic Friday at 3 p.m. at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium. The Blue Jays and Cardinals will then play two on Saturday, March 26, beginning at noon.
