Aichele's timely baskets lift women's basketball over Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Alyssa Aichele is well known for her defensive capabilities, but it was her offense that made the difference late in the fourth quarter of the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team's 53-47 win at Stevenson Monday night. Rachel Forjan and Emily Martin each had 15 points to help the Blue Jays remain undefeated all-time against the Mustangs.

Stevenson (12-7) was up 7-2 in the first couple minutes, but four straight points from the reigning Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, Martin, brought Elizabethtown (13-6) within a point. She hit the offensive glass, grabbing a board off a missed shot and was fouled in the process of going back up for a layup. She hit both foul shots before Aichele drove down the left side of the lane on the next possession and dished the rock to Martin on the opposite block for the easy lay-in.

Forjan and Martin combined to score E-town's first 11 points. The Jays had five offensive rebounds in the first quarter and six second chance points to help give them the one-point lead, 13-12, going into the second.

Marissa Gingrich hit a three and Martin nailed an elbow jumper to give the Jays an 18-14 lead, but turnovers began to plague Elizabethtown, which led to some easy buckets for the Mustangs. Overall, Stevenson only shot 9-for-28 from the floor in the first half and took a two-point lead into halftime after outscoring EC 14-11 in the second quarter.

Aichele forced an early turnover, her third steal of the game, in the third quarter that Martin quickly converted into a fast break layup to knot the game up at 26-26. It gave Martin ten points at that juncture, her 11th straight in double figures and 18 out of 19 this season. The center hit two early shots and Abby Beyer drained a trey as E-town was good on three of its first five shots of the quarter. Aichele found Beyer open for another easy lay-in with only a few ticks left on the clock in the third. EC led 38-34 after three.

The Mustangs regrouped and took back the momentum in the beginning portions of the fourth, scoring five quick points in the first minute to retake the lead at 39-38.

Elizabethtown showed its mettle and resilience and did not allow Stevenson to get more than one possession ahead. The Jays were down 44-41 with 4:30 left, and that's where Aichele made her offensive mark on the game. She hit two free throws that lead to another tie in the game at 44-44. While the defense held the Mustangs off the scoreboard, Aichele hit her lone three-pointer of the game with 2:24 to go to put her team ahead. Beyer grabbed a defensive rebound and on the ensuing possession, Aichele drove from right to left across the lane and made her left-handed layup to increase the lead to five, 49-44, with 1:41 remaining.

A backcourt turnover from Elizabethtown led directly to a Stephanie Martinez three, but Martin and Beyer combined for four made foul shots over the final 40 seconds of play to allow the Jays some breathing room and get out of Stevenson with the 53-47 win.

Forjan posted 15 points while Martin registered her 11th double-double of the year with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Aichele ended with nine points, seven coming in that pivotal stretch in the fourth quarter. She also added five boards and five steals. Beyer had eight points.

The women's basketball team will have the rest of the week off before hosting Moravian on Saturday, February 13 at 4 p.m. That game begins a critical stretch for the Jays with four games in seven days, including three against playoff caliber teams.
