Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bench production, free throws lead women's basketball to big win over Moravian

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — With two of its top players facing foul trouble for much of the game, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team got a huge boost from its bench during its 86-80 win over Moravian Saturday afternoon at Thompson Gymnasium. E-town's reserves put in 25 points and the Blue Jays hit their free throws down the stretch to stave off the Greyhounds' comeback bid. Emily Martin registered her 12th double-double of the season with a team-high 22 points and 19 rebounds.

Elizabethtown (14-6, 9-4 Landmark) was 0-for-3 from the floor in the first two minutes and 15 seconds of the game while Moravian (17-6, 10-4 Landmark) built up a 6-0 lead. The Blue Jays held the Greyhounds, who rank in the top 20 in scoring offense in Division III, scoreless for over four minutes of the first quarter and a 12-2 run had the Jays up by two buckets after Emma Hoesman found Martin for a layup with 2:25 left in the opening period.

Alyssa Aichele, a key piece of the game plan for E-town defensively, picked up her third foul two minutes into the second quarter, forcing one of the top defensive players in the conference and country to the bench.

Upon her insertion into the game, Rachel Liszkiewicz stepped up and drained a trey that gave Elizabethtown the lead back at 19-17. After Martin's jumper in the paint, Rachel Forjan dropped in a three-pointer of her own to give the Jays a four-point cushion with over half the quarter still to play.

Marissa Gingrich and Liszkiewicz both came up with steals that led to E-town buckets. Forjan converted Gingrich's theft into a made jumper while Meredith Holley was good on a layup following Liszkiewicz's only steal of the game. Liszkiewicz made a layup on the following E-town possession that capped off an 8-0 run that made it 35-24, the Jays' largest lead of the game.

A 7-2 run from Moravian cut the deficit to six with under a minute to go in the half, but when Forjan missed a jumper, Liszkiewicz and Holley both came up with offensive rebounds to keep the possession alive and eventually Holley would get fouled in the act of shooting and made the layup. Her free throw put EC back up nine with 24 seconds left in the first half. They led 40-33 at the break.

Elizabethtown was able to maintain its lead and keep it between eight and 11 points throughout much of the third quarter, despite only getting a few minutes in the quarter from Aichele and Martin (foul trouble).

The Greyhounds were within two with 11 seconds left in the third when Samantha Caliguiri hit the second of her back-to-back layups. Liszkiewicz put it back up to four, making two of three foul shots and being hit in the act of shooting a three with a second to go.

Martin grabbed three rebounds right away in the fourth, all on the defensive end, and was good on the Blue Jays opening shot of the fourth to give them a six-point lead at 63-57. Caliguiri got Moravian within four, but Forjan canned another three on a timely make for the senior after she hadn't scored since the second.

Alesha Marks grabbed a defensive rebound off a missed free throw, but Aichele tipped her pass, grabbed the loose ball, and made the fast break layup to provide Elizabethtown a little breathing room at 73-64 with 4:55 left in the game.

A couple offensive rebounds for the Greyhounds and forced turnovers led to a 7-0 run to bring them within just two, but the will of the Blue Jays did not break in the moment. Martin pulled down a board off an E-town miss and went back up for the put-back layup. She hauled in another rebound on Moravian's ensuing possession and after Hoesman's two-point bucket, Martin blocked Alexis Wright's shot attempt. Martin made it a six-point affair with another lay-in with 1:22 to go.

As the time wound down and the intensity level of the game ramped up, it was Elizabethtown that came up with the big free throws late in the contest. Gingrich and Hoesman combined to hit five of six from the line and the Jays went 20-for-25 in the game to help come away with the win.

Holley produced a career-high seven points in 15 minutes of action and added six rebounds. Gingrich and Liszkiewicz both contributed nine points, which is a career-high for Liszkiewicz. Forjan had 12 and Aichele posted ten points. Martin's 22 came on 9-for-18 from the floor at 4-for-4 at the foul line.

The women's basketball team will gear up to play Susquehanna on Monday in Selinsgrove, Pa. in a makeup game from Jan. 23 that was postponed due to snow. It will be the first of two meetings with the Crusaders in a week's time. Monday's game is scheduled for 8 p.m.
