Jays struggle from the field, fall to Susquehanna

SELINGSGROVE, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team had a chance to really help its position in the playoff race with a win at Susquehanna Tuesday night. The Blue Jays struggled from the floor, however, and the Crusaders were able to use a 25-point second quarter to open up a double-digit lead it would maintain throughout the rest of the game to defeat E-town, 72-54.

Emily Martin, the two-time reigning Athlete of the Week, kept Elizabethtown (14-7, 9-5 Landmark) going despite a slow start from the team. 13 of Martin's game-high 20 points came in the first 20 minutes, as did 17 of her game-high 19 rebounds. She finished with her 13th double-double of the season.

Susquehanna (15-7, 8-6 Landmark) held E-town to under 25 percent shooting in the first half as the Jays shot 10-for-41. Meanwhile, Sofie and Angie Schedler combined for 23 first-half points and the Crusaders took a 16-15 lead from the first quarter and made it 41-27 by the half.

The three-point shot has always been the great equalizer in the game, but even though they fell behind, Elizabethtown was unable to connect from distance. The Blue Jays were just 2-for-15 from downtown.

Rachel Forjan was held in check by the Crusader defense as the senior was limited to just 11 points on 5-for-20 shooting. She was the only other player in double digits for Elizabethtown.

Sofie Schedler led Susquehanna with 16 points while her sister, Angie, added 14. Courtney Adams (12) and Nicole Gault (10) also had ten or more as the orange and maroon tightened the Landmark Conference playoff race, just a game back of the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown will turn right around for another road game, traveling to Drew tomorrow night for a 7 p.m. Landmark Conference contest.
