Women's basketball gets much-needed victory over Drew

MADISON, N.J. — The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team needed a win at Drew Wednesday evening to set up a do-or-die game on Saturday with Susquehanna to get into the conference playoffs. The Blue Jays led at the half and then pulled away over the final 20 minutes to beat Drew, 59-45, behind a game-high 24 points from Rachel Forjan.

After struggling with its shooting last night at Susquehanna, Elizabethtown (15-7, 10-5 Landmark) didn't get out to a great start at Drew, either. Emily Martin's layup was the Jays' first and only basket until Marissa Gingrich stole the ball and beat the buzzer with a lay-in with a second left in the first quarter. Luckily for E-town, Drew (7-18, 4-12 Landmark) wasn't any better from the field as the first ten minutes ended in a 4-4 tie.

The game picked up in the second quarter as Forjan began 3-for-3 from the floor and scored seven of the Blue Jays' first nine points in the second. She hit her first of four treys 18 seconds in to give EC a three-point edge. Forjan then assisted on Meredith Holley's basket before hitting back-to-back jumpers on consecutive possessions.

The Rangers took a five-point lead with 2:20 left in the first half after two straight layups, but a 7-0 run from Elizabethtown put the blue and grey up at the half. Forjan canned another three with 36 ticks on the clock off an assist from Martin to give E-town the lead.

The trio of Forjan, Martin, and Gingrich combined to score 30 of Elizabethtown's 37 second-half points. Forjan netted 14 of her 24, Martin added eight of her 12 as did Gingrich in the third and fourth quarters. E-town stretched its two-point lead at the break to 12 by the end of the third.

The Rangers had the deficit cut to six with 3:36 left in the fourth, but Forjan and Gingrich hit a jumper each on two E-town possessions between a Drew turnover to put the lead back into double digits for good.

Forjan was back over 20 points for the first time in six games, hitting nine shots on the night. Martin collected her 14th double-double of the season and fourth in a row. Gingrich's 12 points were her most since Jan. 9.

Elizabethtown finished with 26 points in the paint and 21 points off 24 turnovers by the Rangers. The Jays shot just under 38 percent for the game (24-for-64).

A win on Saturday against Susquehanna will get the Blue Jays into the Landmark Conference playoffs for the second year in a row. E-town and SU are set for a 4 p.m. tip-off, which is also Senior Day for EC.
