Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Beyer lights it up in Blue Jays' win at Goucher

TOWSON, Md. — The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team had its third different player lead the team in scoring in the past three games as Abby Beyer dropped a career-best 26 points and the Blue Jays went on to a 78-58 victory at Goucher Saturday afternoon.

Elizabethtown (12-6, 8-4 Landmark) was out 9-2, holding Goucher (8-13, 3-9 Landmark) to just one made basket over the first 4:24 of the first quarter. The Gophers used a 12-5 run over the next five minutes to tie the game at 14-14 with less than a minute in the opening period. Rachel Liszkiewicz's layup with 14 ticks on the clock had the Jays up a bucket going into the second.

Beyer had Elizabethtown's first six points of the second quarter as the teams went back-and-forth on either end. The freshman guard hit one of her career-best three three-pointers to put EC up five, but Goucher responded quickly, cutting the deficit to two.

Emily Martin, fresh off her career-high of 26 points three nights ago at Catholic, was back in double figures for the tenth straight game with 21 points. Her and-one with 2:43 left in the second quarter had the Blue Jays back up by two possessions. Beyer converted one of Alyssa Aichele's seven steals into a layup off a pass from Rachel Forjan. Though, again, the Gophers didn't allow E-town to pull away. India Perkins knocked down a jumper with 20 seconds left in the first half to make it 33-29 Elizabethtown at the break.

The contest remained close through the third quarter, but the fourth is where the game was won. A 12-0 run to start the final period sent the Jays to a 14-point lead and this time Goucher couldn't respond. Seven of Martin's career-high 11 made free throws came in the fourth. E-town outscored Goucher 24-6 in the fourth quarter.

Beyer hit ten of her 17 shot attempts, both career-highs, as were her three made treys. Martin's was over 20 points for the second consecutive game while Forjan added 16 points and a team-high five assists. Aichele had her typical stat line, finishing with six points, eight boards, and seven steals, which is the tenth game this season the senior has had at least five thefts in a game.

The women's basketball team will face Stevenson on the road Monday, February 8, at 7 p.m.
