Martin shines, Blue Jays pick up key road win at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Emily Martin exploded for a game and career-high 26 points to help the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team earn a pivotal conference road victory at Catholic Wednesday evening. Martin finished with her tenth double-double of the season as E-town emerged from the Dufour Center 66-61 winners and are now tied with the Cardinals for third in the Landmark.

Martin was engaged in the action from the get-go. With Elizabethtown (11-6, 7-4 Landmark) down four, the junior connected on consecutive layups on consecutive possessions to knot the game at 4-4 in the first three minutes of the game. She went on to score 12 of the Jays' 20 first-quarter points. E-town led 20-16 after one period of play.

Martin and Rachel Forjan each recorded three points to get the Blue Jays up eight, 26-18, as Martin had a foul shot and a lay-in while Forjan dialed in from three-point range, one of her three on the night. It would be the largest lead of the first half for E-town.

Catholic (12-8, 7-4 Landmark) battled back and eventually tied the game up at 31-31 with 2:17 to go in the second quarter. From there, however, Elizabethtown rattled off the next seven points and took a 38-31 edge into halftime. Abby Beyer took a feed from Emma Hoesman and sank a jumper, Meredith Holley converted a layup on the following Jays' possession. Marissa Gingrich ended the half with a buzzer-beating trey.

The second half began much like the first with Martin scoring early. She hit a jumper to put EC up nine, but the Cardinals came back down and got a layup from Payton Smith. Martin was fouled on the next offensive series in the process of shooting and went to the foul line, where she sank both attempts.

The game went back-and-forth for the duration of the third quarter, and by the end, E-town eventually had its lead into double digits. Martin's free throw put Elizabethtown up 53-42 heading into the final ten minutes.

Forjan's jumper with 5:22 left in regulation gave the Blue Jays the largest lead of the game at 13, but Catholic slowly worked it way back into the game. The Cardinals were back within two possessions with under 2:30 left in the game.

Fittingly, Martin had the final point of the night for E-town. Samantha Cowan hit a three-pointers for Catholic with seven seconds to go, but it only cut the score to 66-61, the final margin of victory for the Jays.

Martin made a season-high ten field goals and finished with a season-best shooting percentage (10-for-15; 66.7%). She hauled in 11 rebounds and added a pair of steals, assists, and one block. Forjan contributed 18 points and went a perfect 5-for-5 at the foul line.

The women's basketball team will play at Goucher on Saturday, February 6 at 4 p.m.
