Mount Union too much for Blue Jays

BAYAMON, P.R. – Elizabethtown College freshman goalie Abby Kopytko came up with 11 saves in just her second career game, but a powerful Mount Union offense ruled the day, Monday, in sending the Blue Jays to a 21-6 defeat.

Taylor Pensyl scored a pair of goals around one from Susie Kraus and the Purple Raiders, who were receiving votes in the IWLCA national poll, opened up a 3-0 lead 7:01 into the game.

Elizabethtown (1-1) got on the board when senior midfielder Dana Robidoux shoveled a shot past Mount Union goalie Nikki Bonaduce with just over 22 minutes to play in the first half.

Allison McLamb and Mary Nell Donahue added goals for the Blue and Gray in the period.

As the final seconds ticked down, Robidoux earned a free position attempt, which she covered as time expired to trim the Purple Raiders' (1-0) lead to 10-4 at halftime.

Mount Union would put the game out of reach with seven straight goals in a span of 10:59 to start the second half.

Addie Stang second-half goal was her fifth of the season, and rookie Julia Ferrante collected her first career marker with 14:31 to play.

Kopytko was busy for the entire 60 minutes, facing 44 shots (32 on goal) from the Purple Raiders. Elizabethtown was outshot 44-12 and struggled to gain possession. Mount Union's Katie Elder won six draws and teammate Marjie McNamara five, as 75% (21-of-28) draws went to the Purple Raiders.

Pensyl's six points (four goals, two assists) led the way for Mount Union. Katherine Doraty and Krause also had four goals, while McNamara registered a hat trick.

McLamb caused three turnovers, won three draw controls and picked up two ground balls for the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown will face 17th-ranked St. John Fisher Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (10:30 a.m. locally in P.R.).
