No. 18 Susquehanna storms back to defeat men's basketball 86-70

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Dylan Krieger's 15 first-half points lifted Elizabethtown to a four-point halftime lead over No. 18 Susquehanna, but the Crusaders' Steven Weidlich hit seven of his nine 3-pointers over the final 20 minutes to steer his team to an 86-70 victory Thursday evening.

Weidlich scored a game-high 33 points and came up one trey shy of Brandon Hedley's school record 10, set last February against the Blue Jays.

E-town (3-20, 1-14 Landmark) held a halftime lead for the second straight night in an attempt to push its longtime rival out of the No. 1 spot in the conference standings. Krieger was unstoppable in the first, knocking down seven of the eight shots he took, collecting five boards and blocking a pair of SU shots.

During a three-minute stretch late in the half, Krieger was the only player on either team to score. The Hanover native scored seven straight points to put the Blue Jays up 34-25 with 4:25 left. Susquehanna (21-3, 12-3) cut E-town's advantage to 38-34 before the half was through.

Krieger showed no signs of slowing down by scoring the Jays' first points of the second half. Weidlich answered with eight straight points for the Crusaders and Josh Miller had five in a row to pull the home side within 48-47 at the 16:19 mark.

A layup by Weidlich on Susquehanna's next possession put the Crusaders in front for the first time since early in the first half –and for good.

SU outscored the Blue Jays 31-15 in the first eight minutes of the second half to take control, 65-53.

Weidlich and Miller (20 points, 11 rebounds) combined for 53 of Susquehanna's 86 points. Tyler Hoagland handed out seven assists and Hedley finished with 11 points and four dimes.

Krieger upped his scoring average to 11.6 points per game in 15 contests after scoring a career-high 26 Thursday. It marked the rookie's second 20-point game in his last three. Krieger also hauled in 10 rebounds for his third straight double-double.

Junior guard Peter Harding tied a career-high with four 3-pointers on his way to 14 points. Tommy James had nine points and Matt Lapkowicz seven to go with seven rebounds for the Blue and Gray.

The Blue Jays connected at a 47.5% clip from the floor against the Crusaders (28-of-59). SU, thanks in large part to Weidlich, hit 16-of-33 attempts from 3-point range.

Elizabethtown will honor its seniors prior to the season finale against Susquehanna Saturday at 2 p.m.
