Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jays' spoiler bid comes up short against Drew

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Sitting outside of the playoff picture themselves, the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team tried to deliver a final blow to Drew's postseason hopes Wednesday night at Thompson Gymnasium. Despite leading by as many as eight points in the second half, the Blue Jays could not get the tying shot to go down in the final 10 seconds allowing the Rangers to hold on, 68-64.

Drew is still in need of a Juniata loss at Moravian Saturday to claim the final Landmark Conference Championships berth. The Rangers wrapped up their regular season with their comeback victory over the Blue Jays (3-19, 1-13 Landmark).

Dylan Krieger played a career-high 26 minutes and responded with his second consecutive double-double. The freshman from Hanover was 7-of-10 at the foul line and finished with team-highs of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Late in the going, Krieger came up with a three-point play that trimmed Drew's (11-14, 8-8) lead to 62-59 with 2:49 to play.

Elizabethtown led at the half for just the sixth time in 22 games, holding a 35-32 advantage after Krieger made 1-of-2 at the foul line with under 40 ticks left.

The Jays' lead quickly grew to eight out of the break after a Matt Lane 3-pointer and Peter Harding jumper. Lane made 4-of-6 shots on the night, including both of his tries from beyond the arc, for a career-high 12 points.

Momentum swung in Drew's favor over the next 3:49, however. Leading scorer Mike Klinger, held to eight points on 2-of-7 shooting in the first half, rang up a pair of threes during a 13-3 run. The second of Klinger's triples gave the Rangers their first lead of the second half, 45-43, with 15:02 to go. Drew would not give up the lead the rest of the way.

Matt Lapkowicz scored 14 points and collected five rebounds for the Blue and Gray, and Josh Eden gave the hosts four double-figure scorers with 11 points. Eden also had eight rebounds.

The two teams were nearly even across the board Wednesday. Drew shot just a bit better than the Jays from the floor and foul line, but E-town outscored the Rangers 13-6 in second chance points. The Blue Jays also got 17 points from the bench –15 from Krieger– to Drew's six.

Klinger and Kevin Herring II led Drew with 19 points apiece. Brian McLaughlin had a nice all-around game for the Rangers with 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Elizabethtown will make-up its game at Susquehanna, originally scheduled for Jan. 23, but rescheduled multiple times, tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. The Blue Jays will then turn around to host the Crusaders on Senior Day Saturday at 2 p.m.
