Washington withstands Blue Jays

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Elizabethtown's bid for its first road win of the season came up just short Friday night. Washington College scored 14 of the final 20 points in the last 5:21, sending the Blue Jays to a 64-56 defeat at the Cain Athletic Center.

Josh Eden, saddled with two fouls 53 seconds apart less than seven minutes in, came on strong in the second half. Eden scored 14 of his game-high 20 points after the break and his jumper with 5:21 left pulled E-town even at 50 after it trailed by nine midway through the second.

The improved Shoremen (5-3) managed not to let the dam break. Baskets by Dallas Marshall, Austin Allen and Joey Shelton coupled with three Blue Jay turnovers, put Washington up 56-50.

Freshman Connor Moffatt picked off a pass and took it all the way to trim Washington's lead to four, but on the very next possession James Drury canned a three to extend the Shoremen's lead to 59-52, essentially sealing the game with 1:57 to play.

With starting guard Jamil Pines-Elliott unavailable and down Eden for much of the half, Elizabethtown scrapped to stay within 27-26 at the break. Matt Lapkowicz and Michael Pastore each had seven points, while freshman Ethan DuBois, making his first career start, added five points and five boards.

Elizabethtown led for the first 11 minutes, but consecutive treys by Armand del Castillo and Jack Greer gave the Shoremen their first lead of the night, 19-16, and started a 10-3 run.

DuBois flipped the lead back in E-town's favor with a 3-point play 13 seconds from half, but Marshall's put back at the buzzer sent Washington to the locker room with a slim lead.

Despite clawing back from nine down to knot the contest with under six minutes to go, Elizabethtown could not find the next level down the stretch.

The Blue Jays committed four turnovers and missed seven of their last nine field goal attempts, including all five from beyond the arc, after Eden had tied the game at 50.

Lapkowicz was the only E-town player to join Eden in double figures, scoring 12 points, but shot just 2-of-9 (.222) from 3-point range after coming into the week at a scorching .583 for the season. DuBois finished with nine points and Pastore seven.

Eden's 20-point game was his third of the season, all in the team's last four outings. The Slatington native is averaging 21 points per game during that stretch and is at 17 per game for the season, sixth best in the Landmark.

Marshall led three Shoremen in double figures with 13 points and came up a board shy of a double-double. Drury followed with 11 and Shelton 10.

Friday's game was up for grabs most of the way, with both teams struggling to protect the ball. The Blue Jays and Shoremen combined for 41 turnovers --21 by the Jays. Elizabethtown could not get its long-range shooters comfortable, either, connecting on only 3-of-20 attempts. Though the guests were good on 15-of-21 free throw attempts (71.4%), they were limited to 35.2% shooting (19-of-54) overall.

Washington's bench also played a pivotal role, outscoring E-town's 32-9.

The Blue Jays will take a break from competition during finals week before welcoming Lebanon Valley to Thompson Gymnasium on Monday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m.
