Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pastore sinks buzzer-beater to lift Blue Jays over Cairn

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- At a time when the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team just needed someone to make a play, Michael Pastore stepped up and did just that for the Blue Jays. Pastore alertly picked up a loose ball on the left wing and hoisted a desperation three-pointer with E-town trailing by two and banked home the game-winning trey as time expired to give the Jays a 68-67 come-from-behind victory over Cairn Tuesday night at Thompson Gymnasium. Josh Eden led the Blue Jays with another double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds.

Elizabethtown (3-4) exerted a lot of energy to put itself in a position to pull off the last-second win. Within the first seven minutes of the game, E-town was down by ten, but fought back into the game over the remainder of the half.

Seil Park put up six of Cairn's (2-4) first nine points as the dribble penetration allowed Park some easy baskets down low. JD Zamroz connected on a three-pointer that gave the Highlanders their biggest lead of the half of ten, 16-6, with 13:41 remaining.

Pastore knocked down a jumper to make it 18-13, then came up with a steal to get the ball back into the Jays' possession. Jamil Pines-Elliott hit a jumper of his own later in that possession and it was back to a one-possession and the closest Elizabethtown had been since the 15:39 mark.

Every time Cairn attempted to pull away, E-town responded. The Highlanders had a pair of seven-point leads dissipate as three-point specialists Peter Harding and Matt Lapkowicz each hit a pair of treys to bring the Jays back within two possessions. Cairn led 38-32 at half.

E-town utilized Eden more prominently in the second half as he created space and maneuvered his way down low to the tune of 14 second-half points on 7-for-10 shooting.

Park put Cairn up eight right away to begin the second half, but a 7-0 run by the home team got Elizabethtown within one, 40-39, after Harding canned another three-pointer on Pines-Elliott's assist. Two minutes later, the Jays had the lead, albeit a slim one at one point, after Eden's layup. He grabbed the offensive board on a missed three and went right back up for the put-back two points.

The lead went back to the Highlanders not too long after and stayed with visitors for most of the remainder of the second half. The Blue Jays got within a basket five different times in the final ten minutes.

Clinging to just a three-point lead with 1:15 left to go, Connor Moffatt fed Eden the ball for the easy two and it was a one-point game with 1:03 remaining. E-town put Gerroid Doughty II at the line for a pair. He made the missed the first and missed the second, giving the Jays not just a chance to tie the game, but to win it.

Elizabethtown had the ball in its possession with under 15 seconds to go, but a turnover sent the ball back to Cairn. On the ensuing inbounds, the Highlanders fumbled the ball back out of bounds and returned possession to EC.

Moffatt drove through two defenders and took a bump, resulting in a foul call near the top of the key. On the front-end of a one-and-one, the shot hit the front of the rim and bounced around with six seconds slowing ticking away. Pastore grabbed the ball out of a pile of multiple players, took a dribble to his left, and with several Cairn hands in his face, hoisted a last-second three-pointer. The ball banked in as time expired and suddenly the first career three-pointer for Pastore was the game-winner as Elizabethtown took the game 68-67 on the shot.

Nine players in total scored for the Blue Jays, including Eden's game-high 24. Harding recorded 10 points with a pair of treys while Lapkowicz provided nine. E-town held Cairn's leading scorer, Julian Collazo, to just nine points.

The men's basketball team will head to Washington (Md.) for a non-conference road game on Friday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m.
