MBB drops Naismith Classic consolation to UMass Dartmouth 73-69

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Josh Eden's double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds helped Elizabethtown nearly erase a 13-point halftime deficit, but UMass Dartmouth prevailed in the consolation game of the Hampton Inn West Springfield/Naismith Classic, 73-69, Saturday afternoon.

Freshmen Ethan DuBois and Bryce Greene each had 10 points for the Jays (3-8), who dropped their fourth game in a row.

UMass Dartmouth's Jon Robinson was named to the All-Tournament team and led all scorers with 18 points. Chris Mendes handed out eight assists for the victors, Arinze Obiora netted 13 points off the bench and Mert Sert chipped in nine boards and eight points.

UMass Dartmouth scored 14 second-chance points in the game and held a 39-27 edge on the glass.

Elizabethtown shot 65% (17 of 26) in the second half. Senior forward Jake Sweger was named to the All-Tournament team following his nine-point, two-steal and two-rebound effort.

UMass Dartmouth led from the opening whistle as Robinson drilled a trifecta on the opening possession to give the Corsairs (8-4) a lead they would not relinquish.  After DuBois drilled a triple from the left wing to climb within 20-17 with 8:10 on the clock, UMass Dartmouth closed out the opening frame with an 18-8 run to head into the break ahead 38-25.

Robinson led all scorers with 12 points in the first half, as he connected on four of five from beyond the arc.

The Corsairs lead ballooned to 14 points just over five minutes into the second half when Tucker Bouchard leaked out in transition to make it a 49-35.  However, the Blue Jays chipped away and made it a 59-54 game when Peter Harding drilled a 3-pointer at the 8:46 mark.  A 6-2 push by UMass Dartmouth, featuring four points by Obiora, gave the Corsairs some breathing room at 65-56, only to have Elizabethtown pour on an 11-4 burst over a 4:24 span.

Using three freebies from Harding with 1:40 remaining, the Blue Jays trailed just 69-67 but could never snag the lead before ultimately losing 73-69.

Elizabethtown will return home to Thompson Gymnasium, where they'll kick off 2017 with a Landmark Conference game against Scranton next Saturday, Jan. 7, at 4 p.m.
