Blue Jays run out of steam late in 68-55 defeat to Scranton

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Backed by a game-high 18 points from Josh Eden and 14 from Matt Lapkowicz, Elizabethtown kept pace with Scranton into the late stages of Saturday afternoon's Landmark Conference showdown at Thompson Gymnasium. The Royals would pull away down the stretch, however, outscoring the Blue Jays 18-8 over the final 6:27 to hold on 68-55.

Eden had a strong game throughout, scoring on nine of his 15 field goal attempts and ripping down a team-best seven rebounds. Lapkowicz got back in the groove offensively following three straight games off 10 points or less. The senior from Harrisburg knocked down a pair of threes, while also chipping in four rebounds and two assists.

Elizabethtown (3-9, 0-2 Landmark) seized its first lead of the second half, 27-26, in the opening minute on an Eden jumper and again jumped in front, 32-30, on a Michael Pastore 3-pointer from the left corner with 15:52 to play.

Chris McCullough answered with a trey of his own on Scranton's (9-3, 2-0) very next possession and the Royals never trailed again.

Though the score remained close with less than seven minutes remaining, Scranton's defense limited E-town to 40.7% shooting (22 of 54) for the game. The Royals, ranked 21st in the country in scoring defense at just 64.3 points per game, allowed nine less than that to the Jays Saturday.

John Vitkus provided the visitors with eight points in each half and junior guard Kevin Doolan stuffed all 14 of his points into the final 20 minutes. Ethan Danzig also had 14 for the Royals and Kyle DeVerna eight.

Pastore's six points and five from Matt Thomas accounted for 11 of Elizabethtown's 16 bench points. The Blue and Gray matched Scranton in that category and both teams finished with 30 points in the paint.

Elizabethtown heads to Washington, D.C., Wednesday to face Catholic at 7 p.m.
