Moravian pulls away from E-town with strong second half

,BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- A three-point deficit at halftime turned into a 13-point loss for the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team at Moravian Saturday afternoon. Paced by 14 second-half points by C.J. Barnes, the Greyhounds downed the Blue Jays 76-63 in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams. Josh Eden had a team-high 19 points for the Jays.

The first half was no more than a two-possession game through most of the first 18 minutes of play until Moravian (5-1, 1-0 Landmark) stretched it to eight with 1:50 left in the first half. Elijah Davis stole the ball and Isaiah Jennings wound up with a fast break layup on a C.J. Barnes assist as the Greyhounds went ahead 36-28.

Matt Lapkowicz hit back-to-back threes for Elizabethtown (2-4, 0-1 Landmark) to get the Blue Jays within two at 36-34. Matt Thomas split a pair of foul shots and E-town trailed by three going into halftime, 38-35.

Elizabethtown held tough against a proven Moravian offense as the closely-contested Landmark opener remained just a two-possession affair nearly through half of the second 20-minute period.

A Thomas layup had the Jays within two with 11:52, but Barnes helped the Greyhounds pull away. Barnes scored eight straight points for Moravian.

The Blue Jays fought back, but couldn't get closer than six. Moravian drove the lead into double digits with 6:00 left on the clock and led by as many as 17.

Eden, who had 14 of his 19 points in the first half, was limited to just one field goal in the second half. Ethan DuBois and Thomas each had six in the second half. Jake Sweger was the only other E-town player in double figures with ten.

The men's basketball team will be back on the court Tuesday, Dec. 6 against Cairn at 8 p.m.
