Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late free throws cost women's basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team held a slim lead in the final moments of Saturday's Landmark Conference opener at Moravian. The Greyhounds escaped with a two-point win on two late free throws in the last ten seconds to hand the Jays their first loss of the season.

Elizabethtown (4-1, 0-1 Landmark) was up 2-0 early, but struggled to score until late in the quarter. Camille McPherson hit two treys in a row and Moravian (5-2, 1-0 Landmark) was up 15-4 with 3:54 left in the first quarter.

Lydia Lawson, Emma Hoesman, Nikki Thompson, and Emily Martin all contributed to getting the Blue Jays back into the game as the Greyhounds only scored another two points after taking the 15-4 lead. Martin hit two free throws with four seconds left in the first and E-town went into the second down 17-14.

E-town got going in the second and third quarters and took a second-half lead on Martin's layup after Rachel Liszkiewicz tied the game at 44-44. Lawson found Martin on the fast break with 11 seconds to go in the third and E-town had a six-point lead going into the fourth.

Lawson's steal in the early portions of the fourth quarter lead to Mikayla Ruth's made jumper on the fast break and the Jays were up eight, their largest lead.

McPherson and Morgan Calabrese helped Moravian close in on Elizabethtown and the Greyhounds retook the lead at 66-65 with 4:32 left in the game.

The game would go through the final minutes of the game with four ties and several lead changes, but the one that mattered came with less than ten seconds.

Lawson sank two foul shots to go up 72-70 with 1:09 on the clock, but the Greyhounds would maintain possession of the ball through two offensive sets. Trista Cunningham hit two free throws to tie the game, 72-72.

Elizabethtown had a chance at the final shot, but a turnover and a foul gave Moravian a shot to go ahead with five seconds left. Maddie Capuano went 2-for-2 at the line and last-second chance from E-town was no good, giving Moravian the win.

Martin had a team-high 17 points and 12 rebounds, another double-double, to lead the Blue Jays. Ruth had a season-best 12 points, Liszkiewicz had 11, and Abby Beyer scored ten. McPherson had a game-high 34 points for the Greyhounds.

The women's basketball team returns to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 6 against McDaniel at 6 p.m.
