Women's basketball stifles McDaniel in win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team didn't have its best shooting night of the season Tuesday evening against visiting McDaniel at Thompson Gymnasium. Despite their second-lowest shooting percentage of the season, the Blue Jays handled the Green Terror in non-conference action for a 52-32 win and avoid a multi-game losing streak. Emily Martin registered her fifth double-double of the season to lead E-town.

While Martin put up her typical stat line, which included game-highs of 22 points and 13 rebounds, it was the role players that played key parts to the 20-point victory.

Lydia Lawson and Nikki Thompson each added ten points. It was Lawson's career-high six games into her freshman season and it tied a career-high for Thompson. Lawson had all ten of her points in the first half and helped Elizabethtown (5-1) to a four-point lead at the break.

After McDaniel (3-5) went up 4-0 in the first two minutes, E-town got even at 4-4 on baskets by Martin and the teams would go on to tussle for the lead the remainder of the first quarter. Down by two with a little over a minute left in the first, Lawson drained a three from the right wing that got the Jays back in front. Lawson split a pair of foul shots at the tail end of the quarter and E-town led 15-13 going into the second.

A missed jumper and a turnover for the Green Terror led to buckets by Martin at the other end and Elizabethtown methodically began to stretch its lead. McDaniel would hang in there, keeping it at a one-possession game, but not for long.

Only ahead by one, Lawson and Thompson combined to score the Blue Jays' final nine points of the first half. Lawson's theft and fast break layup made it 21-18 before laying in another basket on the following possession after Rachel Liszkiewicz found the freshman down low. Thompson created a steal and capped off the play with a jumper at the other end. A third McDaniel turnover in the sequence led to Thompson's three-pointer and E-town was up 28-20 with 3:07 remaining in the first half.

The Green Terror got within four by halftime.

The difference in the game came in the third quarter, when Elizabethtown held McDaniel to one field goal over the course of ten minutes. Ahead 33-24, Alyssa March's layup with 5:07 on the third-quarter clock would be the only points the Green Terror would get.

Liszkiewicz's layup increased the lead to double digits heading into the fourth quarter and E-town went on to pad the lead further. Martin gave the Jays their first 20-point lead of the game with 6:12 left in regulation on a jumper, 46-26.

McDaniel finally hit 30 points against the insufferable defense of Elizabethtown with 2:44 showing on the clock.

Elizabethtown held McDaniel to 12-for-40 shooting on the night, just 30 percent, including no made three-pointers. The Blue Jays dominated the glass, outrebounding McD 45-25. E-town also had 22 points off of turnovers.

The women's basketball team is on the road Saturday, Dec. 10 at 1 p.m. at Eastern.
